Rachel Dratch Goes There... This Time in Book Form

Are you ever walking through the grocery store and are totally turned off because people walk up like while you're trying to purchase an asparagus and they're like, "LaVaaar." Kinsey here at the Young Hollywood Studios and I'm with funny mama, Miss Rachel Dratch. I'm so excited. You're officially a published author.

I am, thank you. Yes. I'm an author-ess now, yeah.

Oh, was that--was that ever on your radar? Was that ever something that you thought, "This is going on the bucket list. I'm going to mark it off." Wow.

You know, it's funny cuz when I was, maybe in third grade, I wanted to be a writer, but then I forgot all about that. No, so it wasn't really a big goal of mine but it just sort of happened.

And was it journals? How did this cuz I-I had read that it--I-I had read that bad things had happened and you'd put it on paper and that's kind of how the book came to fruition.

Well, I wouldn't say bad things, but it was more of the kind of thing where it's like if something sort of embarrassing happened or a funny like a bad date kind of thing. Cuz when everything goes great, that doesn't really make a funny story. It's more when something goes a little off I'd write up a funny story about it. And then they were sort of sitting around and then I got this kind of surprise life twist that added a whole plot twist for the book.

So I was so excited to read about, um, your horrible dates because I could relate to each and every single one of them.

You could? Okay, good. Yeah. Yeah.

What is the, what would you say is the absolute worst scenario? What was the worst date you ever went on? Yeah.

You could? Okay. Yeah. Yeah. See, I don't know that anything was like, you know, heartbreakingly horrible. It was just more of this big sort of crusade. Well, I call it a crusade, it really just ended up being like three dates, but I was like, "I'm really gonna try to go on dates." And then I had these bad experiences and then I was like, "Oh, forget it. I'll just, you know," As they said on Love Connection, which was show a long time ago, "I'll just stay on my own couch." That's like too old a reference for you. But anyway, no, I don't know. Well, you know what the worst one was the first and funniest one in the book, it's called Horsemeat. And that was the actual date wasn't so bad, but it was the that he blew me off so hard when he made the second date. That was the worst one for my own, you know, ego and feelings and everything.

Was it hard for you to put yourself on the line? Because you are, I-I was so surprised at how brave you were and vulnerable in this book. And I can't imagine doing that. Oh.

I know, but Well, I know, you know, when I was writing it, I was like, "Okay, I'm gonna tell my story. I'm gonna be really honest." Cuz I always like artists and performers who, you know, not artists, I mean like actors, performers who-who are so honest like that. So while I was writing it, I felt good about it, but then once it's like now it's a book and people are reading it and, you know, my neighbors like know all this stuff. That feels a little weird, but I don't know. I'm just kind of like pretending they don't know what they know, I guess. I don't know. Yeah. No, I did get kind of personal.

It made us like you so much more cuz we felt like we were going through your journey with you.

Well, that's what I like when I'm reading a book, so I tried to emulate that I guess. I just used a big word, guys. Emulate. Google it. Google it, audience. Google it. Okay.

Google it. Okay. Well, um, it's funny cuz the book we-we feel for you cuz you discuss, um, the struggles of being an actor and being your career post-SNL. But right now you've got a new pilot which is super exciting.

Yes. I know. I feel like that got kinda blown up a lot about the book, but it really wasn't like, "Oh my God, I'm in the gutter." It was just like, you know, "This is what it was like." That's the whole Hollywood world, Young Hollywood world. So, um,

Right.

So I'm just kinda rolling with it, you know, but, um, but yeah, now I have a pilot, um, so we'll see in May if it gets picked up. It's with Minnie Driver and Andrea Anders, and it's written by, um, Carrie Lizer, who wrote New Adventures of Old Christine. I think it's really funny, so I have good vibes about it. We'll see.

No, actually, I mean, that's really nice when people, you know, it's like years later and people are still saying your character. So actually that's nice. I don't mind it. Okay. Approach me in the grocery store if you want.
