RJ Williams

RJ here, hanging out at the Young Hollywood Studio with Big Boi. Who you know is one half of Outkast, which is the biggest selling rap group of all time, which is pretty crazy stats.

Young Hollywood

So we got to talk, you said it was like Luke Skywalker becoming the Jedi. Right. So explain what you meant when you said that.

Big Boi

Um, Sir Lucius Leftfoot is a moniker I've been using for some years now. And then, you know, um, just, just describes the, uh, the real dominating MC and, um, I'm serious about my craft and I've kind of mastered it to a point to, I know how to, you know, I want my music to sound. It's like a graduation period for me, you know. Um, a soulful funk crusader from the heart and it's all about making funky music.

Young Hollywood

So let's talk about how it's different. You know, when you're you've known Andre 3000 since high school. It's a long time. What's different with the process of of putting this together?

Big Boi

Um, well, the main difference is, you know, just the, the writing load. You know, when you uh, in a group with somebody like, uh, Andre 3000, we, you know, we share the writing load and I write a verse, you write a verse and we split one or we both write the hook together or the bridges. But, you know, being solo, it's like, you know, I might be responsible for all three verses myself.

Young Hollywood

Now the thing I love about all the Outkast albums and and now your album are the titles. Cuz you're always coming up with crazy stuff and it's like, where did that come from? So I just want to go through some of the titles and actually find out like why you guys called them what you did. So the first one, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik.

Big Boi

Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik was, um, our introduction to the world. So we wanted people to know where we were from. And, and you know, what type of vibe we were on. So, you know, the whole Southernplayalistic, that's how we was living. That's down south down south. We were young, some players. We was always on the girls. What was getting at them like, all right. We was all on them. Real.

Young Hollywood

All right. So that makes sense. I get that one. All right. ATLiens.

Big Boi

ATLiens, um, that was the second album. That was like, you know, us maturing and actually we still represent what we was from. But we wanted to be out of this world. Out of this world with it. So, you know, we created the term ATLiens. Just to, you know, give Atlanta that identity. Um, you know, Outkast in another dimension. We always wanted to keep ourselves apart from everything else. And just really, you know, keep it funky and fresh. So, you, know, we want to stay innovative. So ATLiens, the spaceship has landed.

Young Hollywood

Aquemini. Aquemini. I see. I don't even know some. Everybody everybody used to say Aquemini. So what is an Aquemini?

Big Boi

Aquemini is, um, another thing with me and Andre 3000 teamwork. It's Aquarius and a Gemini working together. I'm Aquarius, Andre 3000 is Gemini. So it's the meeting of two worlds, you know, together. Clashing together to make this funk. Long live the funk.

Young Hollywood

I must say it again. That's why I wanted to learn all this cuz I, I bet people don't know that. You see them and they they sound cool but there really is, you know, a hidden meaning behind all that.

Big Boi

Yeah, for sure.

Young Hollywood

Stankonia, which sounds kind of Yeah. Stankonia. What is Stankonia?

Big Boi

Stankonia is the place where all funky things come from. Um, you know, ATLiens we had to have our own planet. So we named our planet Stankonia. Um, like to leave imprints of funk all over the planet. We're something like, uh, funk scientist.

Young Hollywood

And it's on Luther King Day by the way. Isn't that when you start doing a lot of your a lot of your albums?

Big Boi

Most definitely. I I started, uh, actually Speakerboxxx/The Love Below on Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday.

Young Hollywood

Which is the next album that I was going to get to next. Where where did that come from now?

Big Boi

Speakerboxxx, um, actually me that's my side of the album. It was two, uh, double CDs. Speakerboxxx is my side and I'm like, you know, I really like that boom, the 808 in your trunk back in high school. We used to drive Volkswagen Rabbits with so many speakers in them, like, you know what I'm saying? It'd make your turn if you turn your music up too loud you you get all point with it, you know what I'm saying? So, um, I named my part Speakerboxxx and Andre's part was The Love Below. And that's going to take us to where we are today now.

Young Hollywood

Yes. I got to say this name slowly cuz every time I hear it, I I just Sir Lucious Leftfoot Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The Son of Chico Dusty. Sir Lucious Leftfoot. Yeah, yeah, yeah. A lot of people say luscious too, you know what I'm saying? We got to we got to trick people a little bit. You got to teach us the the lingo here. The Outkast lingo.

Big Boi

Sir Lucious Leftfoot, like I said before, is basically my, um, you know, like Luke Skywalker turned to a Jedi. It's like I'm in a whole another realm. I'm a master of my craft. If I hold my hand up, I can blow your whole album up. I can destroy your album just like that. I ain't even got to look at it. No. Tell me, I'm not even looking. Did the did the camera blink? Okay, cool.

Young Hollywood

Going back to The Son of Chico Dusty. That's your father, right? That was an honor to him.

Big Boi

My father. Yeah, yeah. He passed away right before I was working on this record and it was a nod to him. You know, he produced, uh, a loving citizen as such as myself. And, you know, I'm here to fly the flag for pop.

Young Hollywood

Wow. All right. Last thing now, we just everyone needs to know. Future of Outkast. I'm sure everyone's asking you. Outkast coming back together or is it going to be two single albums?

Big Boi

No, no, no. Outkast is coming back together. One album. Um, I just put out Sir Lucious Leftfoot. Andre's working on his solo record. So we're going to help him get his album done. And then we're going to work on a new Outkast record.

Young Hollywood

There you go. Yeah. The one and only Big Boi. Yeah. Album's out. You got to check it out. And it's Lucious, not luscious. Luscious is a pimp's name. Good deal, bro. Thank you for coming through here. Appreciate it, bro. Young Hollywood. Y'all know what it is. Peace.
