Young Hollywood

RJ here, here in Hollywood Studio at the Four Seasons LA. You know this guy, you can't even name all the different things you've been doing. Pick up here. IMDb, Brendan Fraser. Let's hear, quick, quick, rattle them off, rattle them off.

Brendan Fraser

You know what, honestly, you got me on that one. I would forget a few of them that I was in, a few that I don't want to admit that I was in. It's crazy that when it's that many things and it's like I've been busy, you know, 20 years have gone like that. I'm taking a summer off.

Young Hollywood

You deserve a summer off.

Brendan Fraser

I'm taking it off because I I look I'm a dad. I got three kids. I want to make sure that I just don't have this feeling. I wake up, it was too quick.

Young Hollywood

Do your kids think you're like the coolest dad ever?

Brendan Fraser

Uh, I don't they don't really understand exactly what it is that I do. I mean, maybe they don't understand how well You know what, honestly, all I know is that when we shot for event, it was heaven from visits because it was yeah, it was kind of a kid-friendly set. There's something going on. There were always animals around. You know, I got to pick up the baby skunk and that's huge for that. Uh, a little kid. The animals are out to get me. And what animal are we talking about? There's more than one of them. I think they're in cahoots. This is insane. Shut up. The boss is played by uh Ken Jeong. Ken of Love 10 in the Hangover. He played the villain, right? Yeah, he was hilarious.

Young Hollywood

Any funny Ken Ken Jeong stories on set?

Brendan Fraser

He is one of the uh pre-eminent improvisers. Uh, do you know not know that he is a doctor?

Young Hollywood

I did know that. Was it a brain surgeon or no?

Brendan Fraser

I don't know, he was, I'm sure he was in surgery. And he still is a doctor though, isn't he?

Young Hollywood

Still an MD, yeah.

Brendan Fraser

He doesn't practice medicine, I don't think. But we would come to him and pull him aside. Ken, can you examine my prostate? Oh, sure. He still owes me one.

Young Hollywood

Oh, my goodness. And what's it like? You have to wake up in the morning and think, okay, I'm going to work today. I'm going to get hit in the face or I'm going to get kicked in the crotch or I'm going to get thrown in a in a toilet with a bunch of crap. What goes through your mind? Like, what am I going to do tomorrow? How can you beat me up? It's Tuesday.

Brendan Fraser

Yeah. That's what I would say. Um, it was kind of a challenge that Roger was always throwing down. He was our director. It became like, is that all you got, man? Is that it? Is that all you giving me? You got you got a body harness? You want to hang me upside down? Oh, yeah, yeah. You want to spurt me in the face with stuff? I thought, that's all right. I can do it. I'll take another take. Why? What do you mean you got the take? I'll do it again. Actually, it was quite empowering to do these strange things.

Young Hollywood

What I want to know though is how do you transition like you do these big blockbusters like Mummy and these really fun films like like the one we're talking about now and then you'll do like Crash and like these, you know, serious films. Like, how does your mindset work? Like, getting hit in the face one day and then like an intense emotional crying scene the next day.

Brendan Fraser

That's a fair question. I I guess actors act. They like to work. You know, if that's what you do, that's what you do. I I uh I I've always felt grateful to be able to be a part of what it is that we do. I mean, I'm going to get to talk to folks like yeah, I mean, I'm really sincerely happy to to do it. You know, if you want to be an actor, doesn't necessarily mean that you can be, you're allowed to be. And young folks have have people often ask me, you know, how do I, what do I you got an agent? The answer is I don't really know. But I do know that if you have perseverance and you try uh hard enough, you work hard enough, uh then really I mean, I hear like Conan O'Brien's final words on his show. Good things can happen. Cool things will happen.

Young Hollywood

If you were to create a movie about your life, what would you call it?

Brendan Fraser

Yeah, what would you call it? If you're just going to create a movie about your life. I don't know, I thought of this. Um, my imaginary friends. And a come of age and learn the trade beyond what it means to be an actor and that is how to work in the realm of uh having uh CG and digital effects and now 3D. And that is that anything is possible. And it's not just if you think you can throw enough money at it, you can create anything. But if you can think it, I think it. You can you can put that on a screen. I I mean, I sort of got this on the job training of how to work with uh with certain elements that aren't there. I'm often asked, how do you do that? You just got to believe what you're doing. If you believe it, then your audience will.

Young Hollywood

Last thing I want to ask. Yeah. If you had to describe Brendan Fraser, just a word. What would that word be?

Brendan Fraser

Sweaty.

Young Hollywood

Right now, how much. Wow, so that's what you want. You want to go down as Brendan Fraser. Sweaty.

Brendan Fraser

Yes, you do. Vengeance, coming out, check it out.

Young Hollywood

Goodbye to you too.
