Sideswiped Star Carly Craig's Crazy Experience with Online Dating Apps

Hey what's up guys? We are hanging out in the Young Hollywood Studio with the very hilarious Carly Craig.

Good, I'm great. So happy to be here. I'm so excited to meet you because you were so funny in Hall Pass with that sneeze scene.

Yeah, yeah.

And you were in role models. You are so funny.

One of my prouder moments. It's amazing.

How do you get into acting and all of this?

Uh I mean, I came from San Diego and like when I was 17, I saw Titanic in the movie theater and made I wanted to like epic dramas. The best. And I wanted to do period pieces and all that kind of stuff. And then I got into comedy, went to Second City. Dan Aykroyd was giving advice to a friend of mine at like a party and I overheard them talking about the Second City and he was like really passionate about it. So I signed up the next day. Like never thinking comedy was my thing or that I wanted to do it even or I didn't want to do theater. Like none of that. But when I got into that school, you know, you do what you go up and you do improv and you fall on your face a lot and you just kind of get braver and braver and I learned how to write there.

You grew up in San Diego. You have one brother, right?

And then I have two brothers and one sister, yeah.

I didn't know though. Manny Moore is your stepsister?

Yeah, Mhm. Yeah.

So that's so cool. I didn't know that.

Yeah, happened later in life. So, our parents have been together for a long time now, but um my my So my mom is a flight attendant for American Airlines and her dad is a pilot. So they met.

Yeah, yeah.

Till you're 24 and then no more. But they um they met while they were flying and so, you know, they've been together. She started listening like Mandy Moore like CDs a lot and she like before I found out and I'm like my mom is legitimately going through a midlife crisis. Like

So cool.

Yeah, but it was just because she was dating her dad.

Yeah. Well, so then she so she just came out to support you at the Side Swiped premiere, right?

She did. Yeah, she's she's been awesome. I mean she's always been supportive. She's just great. Her and Kristy came to Side Swiped though. Mhm.

Okay, so it's a YouTube show about a woman in the dating scene of today with Tinder and all these apps, right? Tell me about the show.

Yeah, I mean it's loosely based on my life. So, I was in a relationship till I was 35 and then got out and I'm like put in this new dating world that for me I thought I skipped out on like all the dating apps and everything. So I really didn't want to be in it and felt kind of desperate and weird to get on it.

Yeah.

For me it felt really weird. So, I I went on a bunch of really bad dates um before I even got on Tinder, which I already had the idea of writing about the show just from being 35 and like feeling old all of a sudden. I went to the gynecologist who told me like, you know, you're at

I saw that scene. You're amazing.

Yeah, with Jason Sudekis. I was like, I get up to my head, but not today but I will. Yeah, Yeah. So amazing. And there you it's like he's telling you like so it's a By the way, that happened to me. Like a hot doctor came in when I wasn't ready for a hot doctor and the nurse really did forget the side of brush. So I wrote the scene like that. But the idea of being 35 and them being like, "So at 35, like stuff starting to dry up your eggs and it's like it drops down to here and then at 40 it's so all of a sudden life math kicks in. Yeah. And I just wanted to write about about that experience. But it became a much bigger thing. Um I went on Tinder and and got the 252 matches because I swiped on like everybody in Los Angeles. And I met my boyfriend really quickly. He was my first Tinder date. So, okay, yeah.

So the guy you're dating now, you met on Tinder.

Yeah. So that's awesome. Yeah, yeah. He's great. So we've been together for over two years now. And he was I mean I was reading the messages first and his was just a really cute message because I was just like we were swiping like crazy just to kind of research for the show that I wanted to write about. I just thought that whole world and kind of like navigating through it was interesting. But on the show, it's multi-generational. Like my mom is played by Rosanna Arquette who is

Which is awesome.

dating and she's yeah, she's widowed and was like a wife her whole life, you know, married with kids. Never really like had a job, you know. Like hasn't done anything besides being a wife and a mom. And so when her husband dies and she she doesn't know what to do. She I she's left with nothing and I take her in and you can see her like starting her life over for the first time and like killing it on the dating apps. Yeah. Like she goes out with Rick Springfield and she goes out with Peter Gallagher and

Mom is killing it. I love it.

And she's killing it. And then the younger sister, who's 25, millennial, who's like I married with a kid. Like got to get married before 30 and have a kid and then she does it and we kind of see the cracks in that and how she's feeling and how she starts to live vicariously through us.
