What's going on guys? Nicole Kutch in the Young Hollywood Studio hanging out with the lovely Nina Dobrev. Nina, how are you?
Jinx.
Jinx.
Also, can we jinx our outfits and like our hair a little bit?
Oh yeah. I feel like we didn't plan that but that's cool.
Oh yeah. Now we have the same length hair and the same
The same black vibes. I like it. All black. All black. Nice.
Yes. You got the memo then.
Well, welcome to Young Hollywood Studio.
Thank you.
We've seen you grow up on Degrassi, The Vampire Diaries, so many other projects. But now you're in Flatliners. Which is awesome. Congratulations by the way.
Thank you, and it's my first sort of adult role. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. Post everything else that you just mentioned.
Yeah, it's pretty dark, huh?
Mm yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
She didn't see a white light. It was more like pure energy. How is she playing the piano now? It's like her brain's been rewired. I'm going next. Charging 200. It's a good day to die. Clear. Everyone I touched today, I'm going to heal. We're not awake. Three minutes. Jamie only did two. What can I say? I'm competitive.
So you play Marlo, who, she's a medical student or resident, right? And she gets involved in an experiment where she stops her own heart to see if there's proof of the afterlife.
Yes. Yes.
But she actually has to go through some consequences, right? With some paranormal stuff.
Or definitely negative side effects. You know how when you watch commercials about with for drugs. They're like, this is an awesome drug. And then somebody really really quickly says, and side effects may include dry mouth. You know. Yes. You may have a heart attack. You may never live again. You may never be able to speak. Well, in this case we also have a lot of side effects and they're not very fun.
If you knew that you could come back. Would you be brave enough to do it?
Well, if I knew that yeah, that I would come back. Yeah. Maybe, if I knew for sure, 100% that I would definitely come back. But with the consequences and everything too. Maybe not actually. In that case.
I'm going to say that's brave.
Maybe not.
Those flatline scenes by the way, are so realistic. I mean, how did you train to do that?
We did medical training.
Okay.
So it's just play doctors. We had to go through multiple weeks of medical training so we could understand how the body works and what happens to us postmortem. And we learned how to use defibrillators. One fun fact is that you actually keep your eyes open. When you when you pass away, your eyes stay open. So, when I was on the table shooting a lot of these scenes, you have to stay still, you can't breathe, you can't move. And your eyes have to be slightly open. And at one point, after that like the takes were four or five, six minutes long, it's hard to do all that. And I would start my eyes would start to water. And I remembered the director, Nils, screaming from behind the camera, Nina. Dead people don't cry. So.
That's amazing. Kudos to you guys cuz I really do believe those scenes were really believable.
Thank you. Yeah yeah we we we died every take, for sure.
Wow, you're magical. I actually heard, well I read that you actually set yourself on fire for one of the scenes. Can you tell us about that?
I did not.
Well, okay, let me I re- I phrase that really weird. You didn't have an accident and set yourself on fire. It was for a scene.
No. Yes. Um. So our stunt coordinator, first they put the the gel on that is fire repellent and then they put on actual fuel on top of that, and then they bring a blowtorch and then your arm lights up. And then I have to pretend to be panicking and freaking out. And then they come.
Pretend? You weren't scared or panicking?
It was It was pretty yeah. It was pretty real. I that wasn't that portion was not acting at all.
I was looking at your Instagram and we have something in common. I mean, besides our outfits and our hair. We both love animals and our fur babies. You have one named Maverick, right? A dog. And then your cat. What what's the cat's name?
Yeah. Uh Lynks. She her name was Lynks. She passed away a little while ago but she's my she'll be in my heart and in my life forever. Yeah. Yeah. She was sweet.
Do you ever bring Maverick to set?
I never go anywhere without Maverick.
That's amazing.
Yeah. She's she's always around nearby.
Well, where is she now?
She is she's on set in in Toronto at the moment.
Aw. Well, maybe next time you can bring her. We love having dogs on set. It's super fun.
Now that I have your permission, I will absolutely bring her. Yes.
Nina, thank you so much for coming by.
Of course.
You're a blast.
Of course, thank you for having me.
