So whichever one you prefer, say which one that is. Okay. The invention of the printing press or cell phones? Would we have cell phones without a printing press? Hey everybody. I'm Molly Argu and this is Young Hollywood. I'm in studio today joined by the Laiton Meester who's back to television in the new comedy Making History. And this show is so cool because it's about time travel. And not much is cooler than time travel. Yeah, except your leather jacket. But yeah, thank you. We're gonna get you in a leather jacket next time. I was wondering since you're the expert of time travel now, if you could choose three places, where would you choose to travel to?
In my like personal own life I would probably go back to like my teenage self or even just like any time in my life when I felt insecure or worried about something like a job or a guy or just like I don't know, not feeling my best and just like you're gonna be okay. Give yourself a little pep talk. Yeah, exactly. Be like you're gonna live. It's okay. Or any time I've been like afraid before a flight like, "You're gonna make it." Yeah. It's awesome. And uh I'm really uh interested in Ancient Rome. I think that that's kind of a fascinating time. I would really want to travel very many places in time and stay there. Like in our show we are in colonial Massachusetts which I think is like fascinating, the American Revolution is fascinating. I think all American wars are fascinating. They're also
You're probably on your history lessons too as you're working.
Um no, as far as our time travel goes we time travel in a duffel bag and so we're not taking it like scientifically or historically accurately. I think my character like to some extent like it is accurate like she wears the garb and like kind of speaks the same and her place in life is very um narrow. She's supposed to get married and have children. But she kind of wants more and she wants an education, she can hunt, she rides horses, she throws axes um and so it really translates well. Um another time that we go that I'm really fascinated by and had a lot of fun is 1919 Chicago. It's like flapper era like speakeasy. We hang out with Al Capone and I get to like spray a room with a Tommy Gun. Um and uh it was pretty terrifying but also kind of fun.
So now that you're back to TV, what excites you most about being back on television?
Well, this is such a different character for me. It's such a different group. I get to work with awesome comedians who have really encouraged me and been helpful in like figuring out that kind of learning curve. I'm just a huge fan of Adam Pali and Yasser Lester. Everybody who created Last Man on Earth like a lot of those people are are making this show and uh I think it's like kind of a similar tone and just really speaks to my sense of humor. It's fun to go to set and like live in that world and it's a very collaborative experience where everyone sort of like comes up with their own lines and figures out what their character would really say and my character is like kind of all-knowing but I also based her on a toddler. In one way she is like a toddler. She's like, "I you know, I can't believe like pants." Like she's like amazed just because she's like living in this new era. And she's like, "What's that?" It's like acid wash denim it's horrible like in the 90s. But she's also like I think because of her innocence and she's so naive and and and I don't know, young at heart like she comes from such an innocent time in a lot of ways. She kind of calls things out in you and then you're like, "Oh you know how like a child will stare at you and you're just like, "Don't look at me." Like don't look at me like that. What are you trying to figure out in my mind? Yeah, and they know like they like judge you. It's weird but that's what she's like.
Did you purchase anything or maybe practice anything specific when you were auditioning for Deb for this role?
My character does wear a corset and that's not something that I would recommend ever trying because it's torture. It's horrible.
Is that uncomfortable filming?
When I did the pilot and the first few episodes, I was like, "Okay, we're gonna do this real life." And like everybody was on board with having her wear a real corset because it's accurate. But after a couple episodes, I was like, "I can't. We gotta figure something else out because like I can't think. I don't know how people did it back then."
Because you're breathing?
No, you're not breathing. No, you're not. You're trying. You're not breathing. You're not like I can't. I couldn't. I was like, "I don't even think I can remember my lines." It's a torture device.
Oh, what are some of the clothes like besides the corset that you have and I'm sure some bigger dresses? How is the wardrobe been for for Deb?
Um, well when she comes to uh current day, she dates Dan who works at Bedford College. So she wears his like sweatshirt and I was very happy about that. Like wearing like my big hoop hoop skirt. Yeah. Um and we got to take off the bum roll which is like the
What's that?
It's exactly what it sounds like. It's a historical thing like people actually wore this? Yeah. So I don't know how they did it back then but it's like a tie that you tie around your waist and then there's this sort of like crescent rolls like Pillsbury thing that you put on your butt. It's like a croissant cushion. Yeah.
Well, Blair of course from Gossip Girl had iconic fashion and she was ranked I think one of the best dressed TV characters. So that must have been pretty fun. Oh right. It sounds like this one might not be as fun, not as comfortable.
It's fun the different like changes for sure. You know, it depends on the character but you set up every shot and you like maybe rehearse like in your jeans or your sweatpants or whatever and then you put on the clothes and then you're the character.
I was actually reading for Gossip Girl the audition. You went and bought a pair of red slingback shoes and then you got the part. Is that true?
Yeah. You know what? I always think about that. I don't know if I still have them. I think I do.
You have to keep them.
Yeah. I think that that was like my like I don't know, they were like my good luck shoes at the time. And I knew that I like couldn't afford them. I like waited on rent and I was like, "I'm gonna buy these shoes." They were like two hundred dollars, two hundred two hundred thirty dollars or something.
And I saw on your Instagram that it looks like you may be recently did some sort of beauty shoot because I was swiping through your photos. I'm like, "She can pull off white eyeliner, peach lips, a bold red lip." I'm like, "She can literally every look is so cool." Are there any trends whether it's beauty or fashion for spring that you're really loving?
I mean, something that I always like to do is have like one thing of makeup that can cover a lot of different areas. So I like tints.
Is there any like certain color of tint that you love or?
Um I like these things that look like markers but they're I think they're Covergirl and other brands probably make them.
The lipsticks? Is that what they are?
Maybe but they literally look like a felt tip pen. Okay. And it's like fascinating to do it to other people like before before they know what it is and you're like, "I'm using a magic marker." But it kind of can go everywhere.
Since we have you here at Young Hollywood, we like to sometimes do the rapid fire question game. Okay. So we have a Making History version of our game if you're willing to play.
Yes.
Okay. So I have just a few this or that questions. So whichever one you prefer just say which one that is. Okay. The invention of the printing press or cell phones?
Cell phones.
Cell phones. I mean the invention of the printing press I think is arguably the most important thing that has happened in
But you would choose cell phones.
Would we have cell phones without a printing press? I don't know. Yeah. It's awesome. Okay. Let's go for it. Okay. Cell phones, right? I guess. Can't live without a cell phone. All right. Horse and carriage or a sports car?
A sports car. Even though I don't really like sports cars.
Classical symphony or a DJ set?
Symphony.
Old school movie drive-in or IMAX theater?
IMAX.
French pressed coffee or a Nespresso machine?
French press. Yum.
Deb's style or Blair's style?
Like Deb's modern style.
Got it. Yeah. Today's style. Love it. Well, thank you so so much for joining us. It was great to have you here. Great to see you and we can't wait to see more of you on TV.
Yay.
