The Strumbellas Perform Live

I got guns in my head and they won't go. Spirits in my head and they won't go. I got guns in my head and they won't go. Spirits in my head and they won't go. But the guns still rattles, the guns still rattles oh.

Young Hollywood

What up Young Hollywood? It's Tony Morris here in the YH Studio with The Strumbellas.

The Strumbellas Perform Live

Thanks for having us. Thank you for having us.

Young Hollywood

Thank you for coming to our studio and putting on an amazing performance today. That was, that was awesome.

The Strumbellas Perform Live

I've been looking at the skies tonight. And I think oh how I miss that bright sun. I'll be a dreamer 'til the day I die. But they say, oh have a good day.

Young Hollywood

I can't get that song out of my head.

The Strumbellas Perform Live

That's all we hope for. That's good. Yeah, it's a good sign I think.

Young Hollywood

Let's break it down. Let's talk about first that, that line. I got guns in my head and they won't go. Where did you guys come up with that?

The Strumbellas Perform Live

Well, um, it was basically just kind of like a metaphor for things that go on in someone's head. And my, you know, kind of the visual representation for me at the time was just guns. It was a good uh, example of something that, the kind of thoughts you have in your head and stuff, so. Does that make any sense at all?

Young Hollywood

No, totally. And you can like but it's not overcoming 'cause the album's called Hope.

The Strumbellas Perform Live

Yeah.

Young Hollywood

So there is like an overcoming situation. I got guns in my head and they won't go. But there's like you're it's contrasting. It's back and forth, right? And you're trying to get out of these problems.

The Strumbellas Perform Live

It's about getting through that, you know. Getting through yeah, getting through. And you were saying how actually uh kids have been sending you videos with I got gum, you say it. It'll be like the mom driving in the car and the kids in the back seat just going like, I got gum in my head and it won't go. And it's the cutest thing of all time. Like we just think it's hilarious but we just don't understand. But then you'll get some kids who are actually going like, I got guns in my head and it won't go. And I'm just kind of like, oh I feel terrible. But yeah, it's wild.

Young Hollywood

How old are your kids?

The Strumbellas Perform Live

My kids are five and and two.

Young Hollywood

Two. Okay. Sorry. So you you haven't shown them that video. Or they would they do now?

The Strumbellas Perform Live

Yeah, oh yeah they watch everything. They're pretty in the loop, so. They come to the show sometimes. Yeah.

Young Hollywood

The music video for Spirit. Awesome. I mean it was it's really like uh Day of the Dead. It's very spiritual. It's got all these cool. Uh where did you guys shoot it?

The Strumbellas Perform Live

We shot it in Toronto, in the East End of Toronto. Um at an old church that was really beautiful and we got to shoot inside the church. And then outside um when the big parade happened, so yeah it was a great location. Um they're from Canada, so that's why you guys that's where you guys from. We didn't choose to shoot a video outside in December in Canada just for fun. That was just like we had to. Our next video is like I've already talked to our label and I said, we'll we'll make a deal but the next video has to be the Top Gun volleyball scene in Mexico at the beach somewhere. Or maybe LA, you know, that's the 'cause we always shoot videos in freezing cold in Canada. So the next video we're going way to the beach. Yeah.

Young Hollywood

It was a really high production. I mean, really high production level. So I mean you guys to have fun with it.

The Strumbellas Perform Live

Yeah. That's the goal. Yeah, we just That's all we really want. We just gotta write a song about like having fun with the boys first. That's you know,

Young Hollywood

That's true actually. So you guys have have a huge band. How did you put together a huge band? How did this come about? Did you was it like one email? Or was this over years?

The Strumbellas Perform Live

It's Craigslist. Yeah, so it started from a Craigslist ad and what's funny like this it's a big band but it doesn't seem big to us because we used to be bigger. So we were what, 10 or 11 in the beginning. We were nine for a long time. And now this feels like, you know, like a real, you know, six feels like a real like uh well-oiled machine at this point. Yeah. A compact unit. Yeah.

Young Hollywood

Six people. You guys released your songs early by yourself, right? And then you released your songs which are all over the radio right now in Los Angeles and in America. Uh with with a record label. How'd that all come together?

The Strumbellas Perform Live

Super well. I was just like, Sure. You know. No, but you know what it was? This record label particularly, Glassnote. So Daniel Glass came, flew to Toronto to meet us. Basically, it was kind of like an old-school thing. He heard the record. He loved the record. And you know, within a week, you know, we were making a deal together. And that meant a lot to me that he just believed in the music so much. He didn't ask what are your sales like before? What are you do this before? He was like, I believe in the record, let's let's So that was just like for me I was like, all right, I I wanna get in business, we wanna get in business with this to somebody who just believes so much in the music.

The Strumbellas Perform Live

I got a head full of darkness and darkness is good. Because if we all die young then we don't get hurt. I got a head full of darkness and darkness is good. Because if we all die young then we don't get hurt.

Young Hollywood

The Strumbellas, how did you come up with the name and who was the person who said, hey, we're The Strumbellas, guys. Who was that guy?

The Strumbellas Perform Live

The name came from nowhere. I was trying to think of a band name, Umbrellas was it and then I thought that didn't sound quite right so I did Strumbellas. And then we all kind of decided to go with it for the time being until we came up with a real band name. And then,

Young Hollywood

And then eight years later.

The Strumbellas Perform Live

And then eight years later we're still working on it. Yeah, but you say like it came from nowhere you say it came from nowhere like it's a bad thing. That's called inspiration. You know, it just came to.

Young Hollywood

Play a little game. We'll play a little game here. Trending topics in Canada and here in America. The first question is, which song would you rather have in your head and it won't go? These are Canadian songs. Drake Hotline Bling,

The Strumbellas Perform Live

Yeah. Oh, wait, that's a Hotline Bling. Okay. That's alright. That's alright.

Young Hollywood

Next question. Sorry. Or Justin Bieber What Do You Mean?

The Strumbellas Perform Live

I I don't think I've ever heard it full, so I can't answer that question. You say Drake. I say Drake. Drake of course. We're from Toronto, you know. Yeah. We're from the Six.

Young Hollywood

Coachella or South by Southwest?

The Strumbellas Perform Live

You knew that one. We are playing South by We are playing South by Southwest. So we're excited to go there and Coachella I think would be amazing too. Yeah. These are tough questions, Tony.

Young Hollywood

Yeah, but with South by Southwest can we just say both to everybody? You get the tacos and you get the barbecue. So I think that puts it over the edge for me. All right. And they're both in really beautiful climates probably. So that's man, that's a tough choice.

The Strumbellas Perform Live

South by's intense.

Young Hollywood

Is it?

The Strumbellas Perform Live

It's it's almost intense where it becomes like really fun. I mean, that's the part right there about it.

Young Hollywood

You're having a tough time with this game. You might get this next one. I think you might get this next one very well. Okay. Which beer would you rather drink? These are Canadian beers here.

The Strumbellas Perform Live

Oh man, it makes me want to drink. I don't drink. But uh would you Labatt Blue or the Molson Canadian? I love them. I can't pick. They're both very similar. They're both good. They're both terrible. I mean, That's like Budweiser to us. Like I think they're maybe exotic in other. They're exotic and cool in other parts of the world, but for Canadians they're kind of the the baseline beer that people don't like. So yeah. I'd say I'll take Canadian. I'll take Canadian. Oh, we don't agree on anything.

Young Hollywood

Would you rather party in Lake Muskoka on a boat in the summer or the hot springs of the Banff in the winter?

The Strumbellas Perform Live

Hot springs. Hot springs. Muskoka what would you be Muskoka? Yeah. On a boat. You would be Muskoka. I'm answering for you. Thanks. We'll do Banff. Simon loves lakes. So I'll say Banff.

Young Hollywood

Okay. And then the American part, real quick, real quick here. The Hollywood Hills or South Beach in Miami?

The Strumbellas Perform Live

Hollywood Hills. That's what we're doing guys. Yeah.

Young Hollywood

Thank you so much Strumbellas for coming to the Young Hollywood Studio and playing for us.

The Strumbellas Perform Live

But the guns still rattles, the guns still rattles oh. Awesome. Yeah.
