From Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, Dirk Gently himself, Sam Barnett is hanging out with me on the couch.
Thanks for coming by our little uh studio.
Your your face is going to fly up.
Oh, there you are.
Oh that it is.
In the iconic iconic yellow leather jacket.
It it's going to be.
Oh.
It's going to be iconic.
We are determined to make that iconic.
I like here.
I like your jumpsuit.
Goes with your skin color really nicely.
Doesn't it?
It does.
Interesting color for my skin.
It doesn't at all.
It's no.
No.
But I think that's probably quite Dirk.
You see something bright and shiny and goes, oh, I want that.
He's a he's quite a quirky dude.
Yeah.
I like that though.
And you have a little bit of competition though, because there is another quirky detective.
Who?
Who would that be?
Uh someone first name Benedict.
What?
Who's that?
I can't know.
I've not familiar with.
Your last name cucumber patch, something or other.
Um Why are you?
Yeah.
Why is Dirk a better BBC detective?
Okay, the thing is Dirk is probably not a better detective.
Dirk is a terrible detective.
Dirk doesn't know how to do any detecting.
He's just like a massive sort of intuition and instinct.
He does have a kind of superpower.
Okay.
Which is that he is somehow psychically connected to the universe.
So he can see all these connections between things which other people just wouldn't be able to see.
But the problem with that is he doesn't know what to do with any of that information.
So he receives all these connections and intuitions and then goes, I don't know.
And just acts on gut instinct which gets him into trouble all the time.
So if it weren't for him enlisting Todd Brotzman, played by Elijah Wood, Dirk would definitely be dead within the first 20 minutes of of the show.
And how psychic are you?
I know exactly what you're thinking right now.
Oh, I know, isn't it terrible.
Yeah, I'm really hurt actually.
Um, not psychic at all.
What are you talking about?
I was just saying that your shoes are rad.
Good shoes, right?
I was just saying about how much I like your shoes.
Yeah, no, I thought I thought I heard that.
Hold on.
Yeah.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
Invisibility.
Oh, nice one.
That or mind control so that everyone would just do exactly what I think they should do at all times.
And then surely we'd all get on so much better in the world.
I think so.
Oh, you Brexit will be solved.
Oh, don't.
Oh, you know, did I hit a nerve?
the B word.
I did.
I'm sorry.
We'll have to have to censor that.
that out.
So you you mentioned him uh Mr. Elijah Wood.
Yes.
Never heard of him.
I mean, yeah.
Yeah.
Total hack.
Yeah.
You probably taught him everything he knows, right?
Deeply untalented guy.
Um, won't really work much.
Hasn't had much of a career.
Yeah.
Yeah, he's amazing.
He is amazing.
Like I feel Elijah is absolutely one of my generations greatest actors, definitely.
If anything, he's sort of underrated, because he is that, he is that brilliant.
Well, you know, you just got in not too long ago.
Um, when when you come and visit America, do you feel like you have to code switch a little bit like you have to, you know, oh, yes, that's not a lorry, that's a truck.
I have to go to the elevator.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Not the.
What's your favorite American word?
I had to ask Elijah what rad meant.
Oh, rad?
Yeah.
Like, oh, your shoes are rad.
Yeah.
No idea.
Yeah, radical.
Yeah, no, no idea.
No idea.
And super rad.
I was like Is that like a character?
Is that like I'll give you another one.
Super rad.
Supes.
Oh, we like totes to breathe.
Totes to bread.
Totes to breath.
Yeah.
I'm on that one.
Your shoes are totes rad.
Stop.
They are, they are.
And pants and trousers.
That's the worst one for me.
Like I kept saying to the guys in wardrobe, I need different trousers and they're like, you mean pants and I'm like, I'm wearing my pants.
We no, I don't need your pants.
Like that's quite personal.
Back off.
I just want just want different trousers.
There we go.
So for everybody out there, pants is okay.
In American English, pants is what you're wearing now.
Jeans, trousers.
The lower half.
Yes.
There you go.
Covered.
But in British, pants is underpants.
Yeah.
Like underwear.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Your underwear.
Yeah.
Your thong if you wish.
What?
Yes.
Thongs.
Yes.
But interestingly, well, in Australia, thongs are your sandals, flip flops.
Back home where yeah, thongs are thongs, right?
Same here, right?
I think I think we're on the same page.
Yeah, yeah.
We found some common ground.
I know.
I know.
We're going to fix world problems on this couch.
It's got a really special relationship America and Britain, right?
I think so.
Um, so you are one of five children.
Yes.
Big family.
Yeah.
So growing up, did you have any favorite family traditions?
Christmas.
Okay.
So the thing that I loved at Christmas was we used to go to a farmhouse.
So we would look after the farm and the animals and This is this is my geekdom coming out here.
One of the gifts was a plastic Doctor Who Tardis.
But like but like life size.
And as kids.
Foreshadowing?
You can imagine.
Maybe.
A little bit.
And of course, what I didn't know until Max Landis told me was that Dirk Gently was originally a character that Douglas Adams had written for Doctor Who.
It is all connected.
It is all.
Everything.
Everything is connected.
Show tagline, everything is connected.
Got it in.
Before we go, I want to get to know you even better.
So we're going to do a couple fast favorites.
Okay.
Okay.
Favorite internet meme.
I do have a meme.
It's not out there yet.
But what what is it?
But I think it will be.
Someone took it on set.
Oh.
It's me and Elijah and without knowing we did this perfect synchronized in the middle of a scene just this perfect synchronized.
And we had this amazing costume supervisor who would just go around going, free shruggs.
So we worked out them.
Yes.
Uh, favorite British snack.
Oh, God, you're really getting me here.
We're going deep here.
I like a snack a jack.
Do you have those here?
Oh, good.
You don't have those here.
No, what is that?
Snackerjacks.
Loved them.
Snackerjacks.
Can eat them all day.
Okay.
They're like little rice cakes.
Oh, okay.
You probably call them something else here.
I'm sure.
Salt and vinegar snack jacks.
Yes, please.
All day long.
Oh, Uh, favorite American snack.
Oh, uh Reese's Pieces.
Nice.
Chocolate cupcake ones.
Oh, okay.
Like the little ones or like big, are we talking like big like
I don't discriminate.
No.
Sam, this was lovely.
Thank you.
I had such fun getting to know you.
Can we here, let's shrug it out.
We shrug it out.
Yeah.
Shrug it out.
Yeah.
Thank you.
