The mixture of films when you look back through your career, it's it's insane. You've covered you've covered every every base pretty much. It's brilliant.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, you asked. You don't argue with me. Just say yes. I'm Oliver joining on the Young Hollywood sofa with the handsome Dominic Cooper. How are you?
The not so young.
Not so young. It happens to us all though. We're just saying this. But you're saying you're 21, which I have believed immediately.
Yeah, thanks for that. You're probably the only one. So we should stay close. Stay close. And you're 23, so it's good. We just turn we grew up together. We went different schools together. And we're just talking about football, which is great because I never get to do that in America.
No. And you play every week and I needed again. No, we play. We play. You're going to come and play. And you're an Arsenal supporter, which means I shouldn't like you. Who? We didn't actually who are you
I'm Liverpool. Which is so wrong because I'm from so far from Liverpool.
I know. I definitely wouldn't have guessed that. I'm glad I didn't guess because I wouldn't have guessed that.
Yeah, yeah. No, three older brothers and they all supported Liverpool. So there you go.
Oh, there you go. Yeah. This is going over everyone in America's heads. They won't They won't use this. But what they will use is preacher. Hopefully.
They I'm sure they will. I'm sure they will.
I had the pleasure of watching it last night.
Excellent.
And it what going into it without knowing the comic book, it wasn't what I expected. I put it on. I saw you there looking all handsome and you and the little dude. suddenly became suddenly became really mad. Yeah. Really crazy. I actually thought, "Did I take anything before watching this show?"
Yeah, it's uh it's out there.
Well, that's good. That's exactly how you should feel. Right, right. At the end.
Right. I hadn't been aware of the comics, but I uh which was kind of which was good in a way cuz I read the uh script itself in its own sort of separate entity. And it and it was I couldn't quite make out what on Earth it was. And then I met the guys. I met Seth and Evan and Sam Catlin, the showrunner and creator. And so there were fine cap and two of the other producers. And there was a room full of grown men trying to explain this how they were going to transform this comic book into a TV show. It was like madness. I've never seen these animated bearded men.
Which is a which is great mix of people to be behind the show. I mean, it's amazing.
Yeah, they've been um well, I think whenever you embark upon creating a show like this, it's the taste and it's tone. And it's how on Earth they're going to get that right. And I think that with the help of the comic book creator as well, I think they all really understood it and what it needed to be and how it was going to work for television.
So then you're going into this, you've read the script. It's mental. You've got the bearded guys behind the scenes telling you about it. Then you do it and then you watch it for the first time. Which is always horrifying. That's a road trip. Right, right.
And we hadn't just because of time frame, hadn't had hadn't seen a great deal of stuff. There's always that however much actors say they don't want to see play back, they're occasionally you want to go and watch a bit. And it's just making sure you get you're getting the tone or you're just doing it how you imagined you what you want it to be. And so we didn't have any of that. So it really was seeing it for the first time. I I find it really difficult a lot of the time to watch stuff, but I'm I'm really proud of it. And I think it I think it's a really good show. And I think it's unlike as I as I sort of thought when I first uh read the script and the comics, it is exactly how I imagined it should be if not better. So it's that's a big relief.
Extremely entertaining. And uh yeah, definitely uh has that wow factor when you're watching it. But it was really fun working on something where you got to experiment so massively with all the things that you love doing. So there are huge action sequences at one point. Then you've got very dark, still uh conversations with each and every one of the the character. There's just a I I got to do everything that I enjoyed about this job. So Jesse obviously uh inhabited by this uh mysterious entity. Yeah. Which I feel like that most days. I just can't explain it. Um how was that going into the role playing someone, you know, that's got so much going on inside, I should say.
Yeah. I I think the confusion for him is what's fun. It's him determining what on Earth that is or why he's capable of holding it. And I think he uh he's finding it very troublesome. And he doesn't know how to use it to its best ability. And then there's moments. I mean, from episode to episode, he changes so dramatically because he thinks he thinks he can harness it. He thinks he knows what's good to do with it. And I think if we're any of us were given that power, I think the majority of us would fail at using it in the right way. I mean, it's such a responsibility. But he's gone back to this town that he grew up in to try and uh I suppose redeem himself or make up for the sort of errors of his past and the guilt that he feels towards his father. And his father was a good preacher in this town that's now sort of fallen to pieces because it hasn't been looked after.
to say the least.
to say the least. So he thinks he's doing what's best for um
Right.
for him and this promise that he that he made to his father. He's quite a very sad. And then you get you kind of get I flash back and ideas of where this comes from and how this happened and why he feels guilty about it. And then, yeah, this power that enters him that he's capable of holding. He he uh he thinks at some point that he's using it to the best of its ability, but it it sort of works um by in the opposite way, as you saw at the end of the first episode.
That is true. That is true. Um not giving too much away. Um yeah, talking about powers. Are you a you a superhero fan like haven't have you ever thought about having a power of your own? I mean, I have all the time. Invisible, I've always wanted to be.
Really?
Yeah, every so often. What do you want to do that? Have you looked in the mirror? I just
No. No. No. I just want to you know, you could really find out some stuff you need to find out.
You're You're thinking of the naughty side, maybe. I know exactly what you're thinking of. You're not. That's one. It wasn't. No. He's so You can't say it. There's no other way of explaining that. It's clearly just for that reason. It's clearly just for the women's dressing room. Sorry, that's that's just me and my personal thing.
Yeah, that is just you. Don't put that on me. Just me. Just me.
We better move on quickly. Um Warcraft. Is another stuff coming up, which is huge. I mean, you're just doing amazing things right now. Warcraft. I'm very excited to see it.
I can't I haven't seen again because I was part of the uh the human element of it. So I got to see I got to work on all the big incredibly elaborate, beautiful sets. I mean, again, Warcraft was something that I did How I've ended up in these things not being not knowing anything about them is unusual. But again, the fan base of that and uh and the world in which that exists. I mean, everything's huge. I don't know whether you know it, but it's just it's big. It's big. It's big.
The mixture of films when you look back through your career, it's it's insane. You've covered you've covered every every base pretty much. It's brilliant.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, you asked. You don't argue with me. Just say yes. Um we're going to discover some things about you quickly. We've got some discover questions. You You're going to ask me that you already know that you're going to tell me about?
No, I want to know. We want to know. We want to know.
Discovery questions. You've been acting for so long. What what you were just 21. For so long. Let's just I'm sorry. I'm sorry. We're 23 now. It's not that you were two. Let's just say that. Um you have been acting for a while though, which is which is great. Um what were some jobs that you had before you acted? To cover around the jobs as it were.
Yeah. I I they they never got too sweaty. No, they were very sweaty. They were uh yeah, waiting, waiting tables. For a long time. I worked to know um Yeah. What else did I do? Runner on sets, editor's assistant.
Oh, wow. But the the you did all of those at three years old.
At three. Yeah. Just for into the age of four. Yeah.
That's amazing. That's great.
Yeah, never very good at them. No, no. Um I thought I was as well though. I remember I remember really wanting to be the manager of this cafe.
We all do. We all think we're great at things. You should see me on the football field. Um what's your guilty pleasure that no one knows about? Something that no one will really know.
Oh. This is kind of a dangerous amount of ones that I can't let. No. So we're very similar. We're very similar. Too many to say. Too many to say.
One last question. If you could trade places with someone for a day, who would it be? Anyone. They could be dead.
But that's obviously just because There's still football. Should we do a football or a rock star? Football or a rock star?
Well, this is your question. Oh yeah. Should we I love that you're involving me in everything.
I know. I don't that's me. I don't want to take responsibility for any of my answers. That's great. That's a big problem with me. Take more responsibility. Take responsibility. Um yeah, what about a um yeah, let's do a yeah, like a sports start scoring a good goal for a day. We have a footballer. Yeah. That's a good feeling, isn't it? Only for the scoring of the goal. Only for the glory. Yeah, more shallow. More and more shallow. More and more shallow. Or no, doing a doing a huge doing a rock concert would be good, wouldn't it? You're asking me. I can't answer the question. I should say something much nicer. This is terrible. It's basically all selfish endeavors. More is so hideous, what I'm saying. I should say something like going to help, you know, being one of those helpful people. No. Terrible answer. No, like a president. But that's too much responsibility. Be a rock star. Be a rock star. The dog. A cat or a dog. I'm quite I would be quite a relief for a day. Right. Right. Isn't it?
I feel like you're thinking about the invisible again though, because if you're a dog, you could go anywhere. Sneak in anywhere.
You can kind of you can just relax. Just chill out for a minute. Yeah, yeah. She's very relaxed. I know. Very relaxed. It's amazing. That's why I wanted to be the dog. There you go. Preacher. Go watch it. May 22nd. It's exciting stuff. This guy's great, isn't it? Everyone's great in it actually. It's a show where you just love every character. So uh go watch it. It is.
