I'm here joined on the Young Hollywood sofa with this extremely talented guy, Vance Joy.
How are you?
Very well, thank you.
Nice of you to stop in in between all your massive huge success right now.
Yeah, I mean I've had a few days off actually, so I'm definitely in holiday mode.
Yeah, Riptide. It's just this song, it's just gone, I mean, through the roof. It's insane. It's everywhere. It literally just came on our playlist randomly as you walked in, which looked extremely bad on our end.
Oh, that's fine. I thought that was meant to be our pillows, but you know.
Yeah. But yeah, it's everywhere. I think that's why Georgie's don't take offense to her turning her back to you but it's just this guy again. I feel like Georgie looked at me before and I'm I'm kind of sad that the camera didn't pick it up because she looked at me and summed me up pretty quickly and turned around.
Yeah, animals have a good sense for people and the fact that she does that to me makes me feel really self-conscious. But um.
Oh no. We didn't want to start you, do you see what you've done? See what you've done? You don't even care, do you? There's no expression. And he wrote a song about you after you. You've got a song called 'kind of'.
Yeah.
Georgia. And that's on Dream Your Life Away, the album.
Yes, yes.
Perfect. She will now be changed to Georgia after this. I'll get new tags. Georgia. Georgia. Yes. When you hit that song and you it just suddenly catapulted. That whole process.
I think songwriting is pretty mysterious and so you you write a song and you don't know how it will react with people and you kind of just you just write and some songs for whatever reason have a have those ingredients that
Like a lovely cake.
Yeah, like a really good cake. It's just like a good recipe. And so you don't and it is like a recipe. It's just like you chuck a few things in and it's such a mysterious thing that I'm not sure exactly how to do it. I wish I knew what to do.
Yeah, yeah.
And I'd do it every day but Riptide is a song that has opened a lot of doors for me and um I'm still kind of riding that that that wave.
And then the tour starts as well. Well, not starts, but your your big tour, the track is starting in April.
Yeah, pretty exciting. I get to go on the road supporting Taylor Swift which is crazy. I'm so lucky.
Where else are you excited to go on the actual tour itself. Are there any dates that stick out?
This is kind of part of this holiday thing that I'm kind of doing at the moment. Went to Disneyland two days ago.
Okay.
Which was really fun. Um that wasn't really part of touring but as a part of my existence is uh it was good.
That was just your choice. You just wanted to go to Disneyland.
We just had a whole day off. We had a lot of time to fill in.
And you chose Disney. Brilliant.
And yeah, standing in lines at Disneyland is a very effective way of filling up time so.
Who's your favorite Disney character?
Um there's a bit of confusion. Um there's Goofy and there's uh Pluto.
Pluto.
And I was like calling him Goofy and I was like I want to get a photo with Goofy. I think I hope I didn't offend the guy inside the suit. I think they look exactly the same.
Goofy has kind of black hair.
Yeah.
Yeah, I understand your confusion. They're very similar. And a lot of people are confused by that, so I can relate to that. I feel like I mean I don't want to offend anyone but it's like were their ideas running a bit thin? It's like some guy's like Goofy and then they're just like Goofy's really good if you got anything like Goofy and then the guy's like um well, I guess if I just like take the black hair off this guy and give him a different name, I can just call him Pluto.
This really angers you. I can tell.
Well, I mean it's Not that you're telling not that you're telling Walt Disney how he should have done his job. Did Walt Disney make Pluto? I mean, I don't know who's
I think Pluto's good and Goofy, Goofy freaks me out more cause he's kind of like is he like a man? Like is he like he's got human hair and he's all dressed in clothes. Like Pluto at least is like like a dog. Goofy's wearing clothes so I don't know, I just want a bit of I just want a bit of realism. I want realism with my Disney.
I can see your passion for Disney. This is this is amazing stuff. I'm glad we ventured here. I'm glad we've got to this point. I can tell. Um who were your artists in 2014 that you that you loved?
Um, I saw a Lorde billboard. I like her a lot. Pharrell seems to be writing every song and he's he's songs are really great.
I could see a team up there you and Pharrell. I think that would be a good little team up.
You think so?
Yeah, I do. I think that could be a good little mashup.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Where they front people on stage. Just for now, there. You don't seem too up for it though, so forget that Pharrell.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
All that, you didn't want it. And then, he just blew you out. He got, I mean, if you'd have been Pluto or Goofy you'd have
Of course, I want that but you I think what in my limited experience of the business I think you have to kind of act like you don't care too much and you're like oh Pharrell wants to do a collab and you're like oh yeah, I'll just like
Well, by the way, you did it really well.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You've you've nailed it. When you are on the road, what three things can't you be without?
When I'm on the road I can't be without uh a book and I'm reading this book Infinite Jest, which is like a 1000-page book and I've read 55 pages and it's this giant bible-sized book and everyone's giving me a hard time like cuz they think that I like being seen with a big book but it's not I just like want to read the book, but. I've I've nailed all the Where's Where's Wally? Where's Waldo books? I guess so. I need my manager, Rach, on the road with me all the time to tell me where I'm supposed to be.
Smart answer.
Yeah, so.
Very smart.
Yeah, so.
Very smart answer.
I try to be very good person to her and then um a pair of shoes and my sunglasses.
That's four.
Yeah, all that stuff. All that stuff.
Yes. You're trying to give me a heart attack. Vance Joy, go check him out. Check him out on tour. You'll see him everywhere and hear him everywhere anyway, but, you know, check him out. He's good.
