What is it like growing up with an opera singer and then I know your dad is a theater director.

Um, is was there a lot of, you know, shower singing and that kind of thing in your household growing up?

Yeah, the shower singing Mozart is not No, there wouldn't be anything like that. And then you hear your dad doing Shakespeare and then, you know. I love this image and I wish it were true. It sounds like the making of a, you know, like a Madeleine

children's story. It wasn't really like that. It wasn't. No. But I did get I got exposed to a lot of a lot of exciting, you know, culture and things like that before, you know, from tiny. You know, it was a case of if they couldn't get the child care, then I'd get thrown into a rehearsal room. So I could just watch what they do.

Did you understand when you were really young what was that this wasn't particularly like normal, like a normal.

Uh, I don't know that you normal, you know, normal is whatever you have. So I don't know how much I did that. I think I I remember going to someone's house when I was about eight or so and sort of noticing, you know, just like noticing the difference of someone who's who has like parents who have a regular nine to five job and come home and they stay in one place and all that kind of thing. I was like, oh, so maybe my nomadic lifestyle is something unusual. But it

Yeah, I definitely need. I did the shower warm up. That's the only place that I sing opera. So my opera workout.

But you can sing.

I can I can sing. I love singing. Music's a huge part of my life. But I yeah, I don't know that I can't sing opera. That's such a discipline. So crazy. So crazy.

And speaking of music, are you a directioner? Because just for people who don't know you did a Funnier Die skip recently where you played a very serious you were very serious. There was nothing funny about it.

No. I was it was a deep, deep tragedy that I was expressing. Yes. That deep grief.

I mean I I I'm aware of them and I think I think the whole thing is great. I'm slightly more aware of them now. It was it was quite random how it happened. I sort of went in for a meeting. I was just going to do something with them and and uh, you know, we were going to chat about whatever we might do down the line and they said, well, why don't you do this thing right now? So I was like, well, okay, fine. I'm game.

Do you think they set you up? Do you think they had that, you know, in the back of their minds?

I think quite definitely. Yeah. Yeah. I was a sitting target.

And he this is his first time directing. Yeah. For people who don't know it. And then, of course, the amazing Jason Bateman is in this film. Joel and Jason knew each other in high school. Yeah. Jason maybe wasn't the nicest

That getting, yeah. The Joel Joel's character is called Gordo and he

Who's Gordo the weirdo?

Gordo the weirdo. And we don't really at the beginning of the film, we don't really know what the history was there, but there's definitely something between them. Jason's character can't even really remember him. So. But I was thinking about this when I was looking, you know, studying for the for this. And I was thinking about my high school years. And I was like, I think I was kind of in that popular crowd. Was I ever mean to anybody and didn't even know it?

Well, this is why the premise is so is is works because whether you were, you know, bullied, bully or a little bit of both, neither, you know, sort of teaser, whatever you want to call it. The notion that someone can come up from your past and just tap you on your shoulder and say, hi, do you remember me? And you probably won't. You know, chances are you probably won't. You know, you think what what how did I act? And how does how does something that I think is inconsequential actually amount to a whole life's worth of obsession to one person.

And did you in in your high, did you go to a proper high school? Did you go to theater school?

No, I never went to theater school. I went to a proper I went to a proper high school. I was at a a school in the countryside. Uh and then I went to a boarding school that was all girls. Oh, which is kind of, you know, historically a hothouse for bullying. That was better. It was kind of, you know, um, uh, my my primary school, whatever you want to call it for up till 13, that was a little trickier for me. Cuz I grew very tall, very fast. I was a target. And I was quite shy when I was little, so. Okay. I had some I had some issues. But I did that classic.

So you you're on the Gordo on the Gordo side of.

Yeah, I I was pretty much unequivocally on the Gordo side of. I was a weird kid who listened to jazz music for goodness sake. Like it was not did not.

You were not throwing Oasis.

No, it was actually, but I but then it was like I was nerdy about music and I was at that point when you're nine through to about, I'd say through to about 15, it's not particularly yesterday. So I had that experience and I also had that really that thing that I'm really ashamed of of when the the girl that bullies you suddenly turns around and says, what do you mean? I never bullied you? You're my best friend. And you're so flattered by it that you're like, no, you're right. I you never did. BFF. And it's it's the worst. That's what I had that experience, which is Right. Shameful.

Okay, because because this is Young Hollywood and this is the gift. I'm going to ask you a couple of cheesy gift questions. Okay. Um, is re-gifting okay?

Yeah. I get I get uh, slightly yeah, I get into the sort of what is the weird thing that I can get that person and what will they like? Like socks for Jason Bateman. As you just told me. We were just talking before the camera started rolling that I happen to know that Jason Bateman likes a certain brand of socks. And now I want to get him some.

And now you're going to get him a pair. Yeah. Did you all gift each other onset? Was that sort of like a joke?

No. It wasn't. It probably would have been if the film had been called the gift at the time. It wasn't called the gift until about a month ago.

Are you serious? It got changed. Oh my gosh. That's so hilarious. Because Joel's character in the film brings you these elaborate. Yes. Gifts. Maybe he re-gifted. Maybe it wasn't that elaborate. Maybe he didn't spend all that money and go through all that effort. I don't know whether that makes it better or worse in this instance. Really? If a crazy stalker is re-gifting. So maybe they're not that they're not that insane stalker. So maybe that takes the thrill off. So I know this whole funnier die thing they they you had you had sort of said, I think in an interview, that you would love to do more comedy. Yes. Is that coming up in your future?

Not as yet. Still no one is no one has taken the taken the bait on that one. I'm just waiting.

Now, is that why you were dangling the funnier die carrot? I'm speaking of vegetables. I'm so dangling my vegetable. That sounds so wrong. Why did he say that? Oh my God. I would too. I don't know. It's I think it's tricky, you know. I think it's tricky if you're not known as a comedian. I think it's tricky to make people take the leap of faith with that. And you you know, if you're sort of generally playing the straight man, there's a kind of right. Tradition of you can go and do the straight man maybe in a comedy or something that's a bit comedic, but it's not it's difficult. I don't think many people are writing those sort of um, those screwball characters that require an actor to do it. If you're not a comedian to do it, it's kind of I think that's sort of a rarity these days.
