Singer Conrad Sewell Performs Live & Talks Touring with Ed Sheeran

So let's talk about Hold Me Up a little bit. First of all, I love the song because it's Is it about a relationship?

Yeah, I mean it's about I wrote it based on like, you know, obviously there's people in my life that pick me up when I'm feeling down or whatever. As a general concept for a song, it's you know, a lot of people can relate to it because everyone has those few people that can make them laugh, you know, when they're in the most miserable mood or whatever. And yeah, I mean, I have a lot of ballads and sort of slightly more depressing music. So when I wrote this song, it was it was kind of like, it felt really happy and it felt like a nice song to put out first, you know, it's like uplifting. It's great to drive to and dance to and sing in a shower to. So I don't know, it just felt like a good vibe. And I feel like if I'm gonna make everyone cry in the future, I might as well give them a bit of happiness first.

Well, I get intermission between tears. Yeah. Yeah. I was reading a few articles about you. A lot of people were saying that you're just so kind. They were comparing you to Taylor Swift in the sense that you're just like really down to earth. Is that something that's just authentically you and you consider yourself pretty grounded?

Yeah, I mean, I didn't know people were saying that, but that's that's very nice. I think it's because it's taken me a while to probably get here. I guess maybe I appreciate, you know, any type of success that I'm having because I've worked a long time for it and I know that it could it can very easily slip away. So I guess maybe that's it. I'm thankful for being here.

What's one thing that you're extremely thankful for in your whole entire journey?

Just in the last year, I've there's been a lot of opportunities coming my way, you know, like I got to support Ed Sheeran, like Ed Sheeran let me go on tour with him and that really boosted my fanbase a bunch.

And then how was being on tour with him? Did you learn a lot from that tour about yourself and just kind of about the whole entire

Yeah. No, it was it was amazing. I went home and the first show I played was in my hometown. Uh like sold out three nights in a row, like 20,000 people. I could see my high school from the stage I was singing on. Wow. Ed's like one of my favorite artists, so I was with him every day, learning from him, you know, seeing him do it every night. It's such a cool experience and we became, you know, really good friends from it.

What do you most look forward to when you go home?

I mean, obviously seeing family and friends and being at the beach and stuff, but food. Like Australian food is is to me like next level, like acai bowls? Yeah, and like everything is like really like healthy and like fresh because we don't like have as that many people down there. So it's all like very fresh produce. Anyway, we won't get into that. That's a bit boring, but um

That's not boring. I could talk about food all day.

And coffee. Australia has like incredible coffee.

I did know that actually. Um because one of my best friends is Australian. So she and she's a big foodie too. So all we do is talk about food and yeah, she always talks about the Australian food as well. I've never been to Australia, but

Wow. How would you describe your sound?

It's blue-eyed soul, I guess. I grew up listening to to big voices and big frontman. Like I love Freddie Mercury and and people with unique voices, like Simply Red is a guy I listen to a bunch and just people that you could instantly hear them on the radio and you would know that it was them singing. All my songs have this pop feel to them, but you know, they all I hope have like a a soul to them. So I don't know what you call it. Pop soul. Yeah, pop soul. Pop soul sort of stuff.

I like that. How did you find your own voice within that genre?

A lot of trial and error, I guess. I mean, it's hard because I'm a songwriter at heart and I write all different types of music. It's just kind of trying to find what your voice fits best with and it just takes time. It took me a long time to to get songs that I really loved and I love to sing and, you know, if I love singing it, then I feel like it's it's mine. So don't ever let me go go go. No, we have some pretty We just shorten everything, really. That is yeah. You're very lazy with our language. Umbs. Umbs and.

What's what's your favorite thing to shorten?

Um, well just names in general. Like if you have like people will just get down to your first letter almost. So it's just people being lazy.

Do you have a nickname?

It depends. I have a drunk alter ego called Connie C. That's kinda scary.

Kind of, yeah.

He's not a very nice guy that you don't wanna meet him.

Okay, no. I'm glad that you can.

He's a good rapper. He's a good rapper. He thinks he is anyway.

Well, let's test your your Australian knowledge right now. Okay. Well, there's two different ones. She'll be right and then the other day I heard one that said she'll be apples. But I think it means the same thing.

Gone walkabout is Australian phrase, which is Well, technically it's when uh the aboriginals, which are our natives, would go walkabout, like you would go to find yourself or whatever. I hope that's right, otherwise I'm gonna get yelled at. But um I guess in modern day times, you'd be like if you if you go wondering, you know, if you get lost, you'd be like, hey you gone walkabout, mate.
