About this video

Actor Josh Wiggins stops by the YH Studio to fill us in on his family film 'Max' and the key differences between working with dogs as co-stars and having them as pets! He also tells us how the film is a fresh take on the typical boy-meets-dog story and the many (many!) similarities between himself and his character, plus he schools us on the proper Texas accent and partakes in a little canine quiz we cooked up!

True or false, dogs do not sweat. True. Oh, just kidding, false. No, you can't, you can't, no, no, no. We have that forever. We have that on tape. Hey, hanging out with me in the Young Hollywood studio, Josh Wiggins.

Josh Wiggins

Hello.

Young Hollywood

I like the uh I like this very casual cool.

Josh Wiggins

Thank you. You'll have to excuse the dog hair. I just did a photo shoot. Max. It's all over.

Young Hollywood

This is very understandable. Um you are in the movie Max and it I mean you grew up around dogs, right?

Josh Wiggins

Yeah. Whole life.

Young Hollywood

But how was it different having a dog as a co-star this time rather than, you know, as part of your family.

Josh Wiggins

I mean it's different. Um a lot of times during the the during the takes, you'll get people if the dog isn't doing like exactly what he needs to be doing, the trainers will have to correct them kind of in the middle of the shot. So he'll be doing the scene. It could be like an emotional scene and then like in the background you hear, "Max, no!" or, "Carlos, no! Sit, up." all that. So it can get distracting, but I mean it helps you like learn how to tune everything out as as an actor. So.

Young Hollywood

And did you have to learn special commands working with Carlos, the the Belgian Malinois that you worked with. Did you learn anything?

Josh Wiggins

Um the commands are pretty standard. Um giving the treats, which is just like you put him up to your forehead so they look at you and then you'd give him that, which, you know,

Young Hollywood

Works on me too. Yeah. Works on humans. Humans improved. Tell me a little bit about the back story. Um you played Justin who um has a new dog, has a new member of his family, Max. How does their relationship come about?

Josh Wiggins

Um well Justin is a kid who feels very um he feels like he's kind of the black sheep of his family. Um his brother was kind of a spitting image of his dad and what his dad like wanted him to be. Yeah. And he feels like he's not really living up to that and so he feels a lot of pressure from his dad from that. And um whenever he meets Max, who's also kind of in the same cocoon as Justin is, um they both kind of grow up together and kind of evolve together.

Young Hollywood

I think both of you deserve a medal or something. Yeah. How was so awesome? This freaking dog's a hero. Hey, feet off the table. No cussing in this house, please.

Josh Wiggins

I didn't cuss, mom. Cut it out.

Young Hollywood

How is this movie a fresh take on the classic boy and dog tale? Pun intended.

Josh Wiggins

Nice. Yeah. Um I think a lot of the um a lot of the family movies that come out nowadays um are very fluffy and kind of centered towards kids and anything else. Um

Young Hollywood

Did you intend to say that? Was that a pun intended?

Josh Wiggins

For yes, now now it was. Um no but um I mean I think this has This is a family movie that genuinely everyone in the family could enjoy cuz um it's for kids also but it has mature undertones to it and actually complex characters and complex emotions in it that you don't see a lot nowadays in family movies.

Young Hollywood

Right. You are from Texas. The movie takes place in Texas.

Josh Wiggins

Yes.

Young Hollywood

You have dogs.

Josh Wiggins

I have a brother in the military.

Young Hollywood

You have a brother in the military. And my dad is a bomb dog handler.

Josh Wiggins

Wow. Yeah.

Young Hollywood

Uh so nothing in common with Justin, your character.

Josh Wiggins

Except for the name. Pretty much. Very strange.

Young Hollywood

Did you feel like you could relate to this character a lot?

Josh Wiggins

Yeah. I mean I think every teenager has a sense of um they don't really know what they want to do or who they need to become. They're I mean they're told by, you know, society and everyone who they should be, but they don't really know who themselves like who they fall in or where they fall in their lives.

Young Hollywood

You sure you want to do this? Yeah. Okay. Slowly. No sudden moves. Sit. Good. You get to work with Lauren Graham and Thomas Haden Church. Two amazing actors. Thomas is actually from Texas as well.

Josh Wiggins

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Young Hollywood

Lauren is not. How was her accent?

Josh Wiggins

It's pretty standard. Yeah.

Young Hollywood

You didn't give her like pointers or anything?

Josh Wiggins

Yeah. Yeah, she I mean it's a lot of people tend to over do the twang. like Like, hey y'all, how y'all doing? Like that's not how you that's not how you do it. No, it's like I mean some people are like that but it's not like you got to do it subtle. You know, you know?

Young Hollywood

Right. Right. Someone taught me that and this is very important because y'all is just like you you are.

Josh Wiggins

Yeah, which makes so much more sense than you guys. I don't know why.

Young Hollywood

But then all y'all is like

Josh Wiggins

All of y'all. Yeah.

Young Hollywood

Anything else that I need to know? Any Texas slang that I need to know? I feel like this is essential.

Josh Wiggins

Howdy.

Young Hollywood

Howdy.

Josh Wiggins

Howdy. Yes, especially if you're going to A&M. Texas A&M. Okay. Um that's pretty much it. So howdy and y'all and all y'all. That's the vocabulary.

Young Hollywood

That's the vocabulary. I'm ready. I'm ready to go. Please ship me off. Because you uh you know, worked now co-starred now with a dog, you've been around dogs uh most of your life. I want to give you a little canine quiz.

Josh Wiggins

Oh yeah?

Young Hollywood

Yes. Put you on the spot right here.

Josh Wiggins

Oh yeah. All right.

Young Hollywood

So I have a couple questions. Okay. Listen carefully. This is worth nothing.

Josh Wiggins

Okay. good.

Young Hollywood

So there's no pressure. It will be on the Internet forever.

Josh Wiggins

Yeah.

Young Hollywood

So number one. One of these is toxic for dogs. Is it A, chocolate, B, gluten-free kibble, or C, cheese?

Josh Wiggins

Chocolate.

Young Hollywood

Nicely done. Nicely done. Here, write it right here. All right. You got two more. Uh true or false, dogs do not sweat.

Josh Wiggins

Um true. Ooh. Oh, just kidding, false.

Young Hollywood

No, you can't you can't no no no. We have that forever. We have that on tape. Uh they actually do sweat through the pads of their feet.

Josh Wiggins

Oh, that's right. Yeah. I don't sweat at all. Ever.

Young Hollywood

Oh, yeah?

Josh Wiggins

Yeah. That's a fact about me.

Young Hollywood

Really? Okay. Last one, the Belgian Malinois is one of the fastest dog breeds. How fast can they run? Is it A, 20 miles per hour, B, 30 miles per hour, or C, 50 miles per hour? It's not A or C, I'm just telling you.

Josh Wiggins

Okay. Um take a wild guess and say it's B.

Young Hollywood

It is B! Oh my god. Amazing! How do I get that? Dog genius. Josh, thank you so much for hanging out with me. Come back anytime.

Josh Wiggins

I will. Thank you.
