Hey y'all, we're Maddie & Tae and we are at Young Hollywood today and this is our new song called "Fly".
Baby blue staring in the window pane, just can't embrace the rain Wondering if she's got the guts to take it Running down a dreams in a dirty dress, now her heart's a mess Praying she will find a way to make it
You guys are so cute, first of all. I'm like "Oh my God, they're so cute." And you're from the South, so I already love you. We're already best friends already. We're gonna be friends forever. Like if you're born in the South, it's like we're family. We're family. You're already family, which is we probably are, which is this terrifying. But you guys did so good performing the song.
Thank you.
So, how did you decide for that to be your second single?
Well, "Girl in a Country Song" was, you know, a very bold statement that we made and something that not many people were expecting from two nineteen-year-old girls, but we kind of wanted to show our fans another side of us and that there is that witty tongue and cheek, strong side of us, but we're also very vulnerable and go through all kinds of different things similar to their situation. That's kind of what "Fly" is about about trying to reach your dreams and the struggles that you go through to get there and knowing that you're not alone and we go through the same exact thing. And so we kind of wanted to just tell them they're not alone. You're not going through this by yourself. So keep on climbing, though the ground might shake. Just keep on reaching, though the limb might break. We've come this far. Don't you be scared now, cuz you can learn to fly. On the way down.
Even the video was obviously a totally different vibe. It was. But I will say I love that you guys did "Girl in a Country Song" as your first single, because you're not expecting for like these girls to be like "Boom boom boom, here we are." And then it went number one.
Yeah, we were even shocked that "Girl in a Country Song" went number one cause we We honestly wrote it just to vent, cause that's basically how every songwriting session goes. It's like free therapy for us.
Exactly.
You go into a songwriting session and this particular songwriting session we went in and we were just annoyed with how women are portrayed in country music. All these cliches and how we're supposed to just be perfect all the time and not say anything and sit there. And we're like, that is not realistic, so we're gonna write a song about it.
So, whenever I do see the girls in the country song, they're literally like in bikinis. They're getting cheated on. Seriously. Or with like a baby or they're pregnant at fifteen. Not like the best idea. So that's why. And when you guys put the guys in like the little like shorts and shirt, I'm like, good.
That's exactly why we did that, though, because we wanted to show that the guys can't hang when they're put in those ridiculous situations either. It's not just us ladies. Is that. And the thing is like, you know, summertime of course, you're gonna go out in your bathing suit and all this stuff, but the fact that, you know, you have to look this certain way to be considered beautiful to in these songs is ridiculous to us. I mean, these long tan legs, five two and five three, there's no long tan legs.
Exactly.
Oh yes, girl. See there's no long legs going on. You know, we were like, we don't qualify to be this girl that these guys are singing about. If some guy came up and said, "Let me get some of that. Let me, you know, slide on over." My dad would.
Yeah, pull out a gun. Before I did. No, I love it.
You've been alone and lonely and you feel like giving up. There's more to this than just the breath you're breathing. So keep on climbing, though the ground might shake. Just keep on reaching, though the limb might break. We've come this far. Don't you be scared now, cuz you can learn to fly. On the way down. On the way down.
So, I did ask some of your fans like, do you have any questions for Maddie & Tae? I saw that. I got invited. And so, they want to know like, what are your tour bus essentials? Like when you go on tour, what keeps you grounded and happy?
Okay, so I have this little thing. You can get it at Bed Bath and Beyond. Twenty bucks. It's a mini steamer. And you it's like this big, it fits perfectly in a purse, bag, backpack, whatever. It is this tiny little guy and it will steam anything. I mean, gets the wrinkles out of anything and like five seconds it heats up in two seconds. It's a lifesaver. The bomb. I have it in my backpack in that room back there. Yep. Should have brought it in here so I could do a little display.
I know I'm like "Savannah, where did it go?" Okay, so the next one. So, what about your song "Boomerang"? Are you guys gonna release that as a single? Oh my gosh, that's. I know. That's how many that they know that song. Um, they saw the show in Portland. I fell in love. They did such a good job. So, would you guys release that?
Well, it's not on our first album. Yeah, we wrote it about two years ago or a year and a half ago. And Jana Kramer actually cut it herself. And she's like, so it'll be on her album. Yes. But,
Yeah, but we still play it out live and
Really? We still play it out live. It's one of our favorite songs.
Well, they evidently liked your version better. We fell in love with it. Oh, cool. Um, and then any beauty secrets that you guys have? What would you have in your clutch?
We have these like, um, emergency kits. The emergency red carpet kits. Yeah. And it's like this little thing that's this big and it looks like a little wallet. And it has over a hundred things in there. It has a little mini sewing kit, has like hairspray, um, face wipes, nail polish remover, bobby pin, everything you can imagine. But we do have one secret. Oh yeah, that's good. We hairspray. I would have never guessed. One secret. Yeah. We hairspray our legs instead of putting lotion because on camera it like glistens almost. Like it has that glowy look and it just it looks really pretty. So, we learned that one. I think for the "Girl in a Country Song" video we learned that trick.
So, you don't use too sticky of hairspray, or like
My legs yesterday were sticking together. Anything anytime I went like this I'd be like, and my elbow would be stuck to my leg.
Oh my God, I love it.
You won't forget the heavy steps it took to let it go. Close your eyes, count to ten, hold your breath and fly. Keep on climbing though the ground might shake.
I have to ask this because she's my best friend. Jessie James Decker wants to know how much you genuinely love her.
We love her so much. Like, I was so excited. We we were like totally fan-girling to be honest. So, we got to Land East. We DM her new song. What was it? The CMT kickoff So, we got to meet her then and we like watch all of her beauty tutorials and love the Eric & Jessie show and all that. And so, we're like, "Can we meet her?" We went to go meet her and we're like, totally hitting it off and everything. She's so sweet.
So, after she tweeted that, twenty thousand more people were like, "Yeah, how much does she?" I'm like, okay, I will find that out for sure. So, when now I know.
We've come this far. Don't you be scared now, cuz you can learn to fly. On the way down.
