Hi, I'm Alison Williams from HBO's Girls. Stay tuned and find out who her childhood crush was. Maybe they'll meet up in a Bodega one day. What's a Bodega?
Hi, Alison Williams. So good to see you.
So happy to be here. This is exciting.
And it's exciting for me because girls is my favorite show.
You are so nice to our show. Thank you for liking it so much. It means a lot to us.
Does it?
Yeah, that means a lot to me. On behalf of all of us at Girls. Thank you for being such a fan. But there are so many fans and yet at the Golden Globe, you guys looked so shocked when they announced your names for best comedy. Congratulations by the way.
Thank you. Well, what would you have thought if we won and we were all like exhausted by it and like obviously? No, we were really, really surprised. And when Lena won, the look on her face was like as if someone had made a mistake or like played a cruel joke on her or something, but we were just so excited. And then she thanked Chad Lowe.
She thanked Chad Lowe which no one understood but it's because Hillary Swank did not thank Chad Lowe. And that always bothered her for years and years. I guess for years Lena has sort of like kept him on her list. So do you happen to know if Lena has heard from Chad?
I know Rob. I think she did. I think she, I think she tweeted a picture of a bouquet of flowers that Chad sent her.
And I think I was like sort of a lot of people who didn't realize the reference until you just clarified it. Thank you. I thought she had a crush on him. It was like a childhood crush or something.
Well maybe she, I mean maybe she did also have a crush on him and then him being slighted in that way was like particularly mean then. Right if you had a crush on Chad Lowe not being thanked would be like you would just be really angry.
You'd be angry. You'd have to write that wrong. Years later when you win.
I know. It was crazy.
So I'm gonna ask you about your childhood crush.
Oh my gosh. Well my first love was Harrison Ford. I was in third grade. I think it was third grade. They remastered and re-released the Star Wars trilogy. So I got to go to the movie theater and I got to see them. And I thought Harrison Ford was still the age he was when he played Han Solo. I'm like ten years old. I still thought I could bridge the gap. And then at some point I was reading like a People magazine or something. I saw that he was not that age anymore. Still very handsome but it was just a moment of reckoning where I had to like be like, okay, you're not gonna you're not gonna marry Harrison Ford.
I know when you first auditioned for the show, I think Jud Apatow had seen you.
Yes. He had seen your YouTube videos. Yeah, he had seen this YouTube video that I made. And I filmed it. It was right after I graduated from college and I like put it up on YouTube and it ended up on the Huffington Post and that's where Jud found it. And um he got in touch with my agents and said like we're trying to find this Marney character and we're having a lot of trouble. This girl seems to have the vibe. Maybe it looked like I had just showered recently. I have no idea.
Has he told you since then sort of what it was? Because you're singing in it.
I'm singing. I'm wearing like 60s garb. I there's nothing happening. I don't know to this day. I really don't know. Yeah.
I need to talk about the sex scenes in the show. And sort of I know Lena's always naked which I appreciate personally that she writes the show creates the show and she doesn't go like I'm not getting naked but you are getting naked. Doesn't bother her at all. No, it's her and she sort of allows you not to be. Although one of my favorite episodes was when you just sort of got down. And the what I appreciated it was
She's referring to a scene in a bathroom. Yes. While I was by myself but also had sex if that makes any sense.
What was amazing was you were sort of naked but you didn't see anything. Like you were kept going like this.
Well that's very Marney. So and it's also very like a lot of my friends reacted to that same exact thing. That element of a friend of mine was like I recently had sex with someone for the first time. They had been dating but she was like I was so there's that moment the reveal is what she called it. Yes. And she was like especially when it's broad daylight. Yes. And the reveal made her very nervous. And like because it was the first time she didn't feel like like she had the place to turn off lights and get it lit the way I wanted it to her legs were kinda crossed immorally and she was like what am I doing? And then she watched that episode and was like that's exactly what I looked like.
So I know you're sort of bi-coastal now. You're sort of New York and LA. And whenever I meet people who are bi-coastal, they always sort of have one love. They say, oh I love New York but I could never live there or vice versa. So what would be your
I would have to say although I do love it here, I am such a New Yorker. I'm born and raised in Connecticut. So I grew up going into the city on the weekends. And I don't know my family's there. Maybe that's a lot of it. Like if my whole family moved to the West Coast, maybe I'd feel differently. But I truly love New York. I love going down to the street at any hour of the night and not feeling alone because there are people everywhere and just being able to go into a Bodega and get a pack of gum at 3:00 in the morning is a pretty unique kind of thing. Yeah. Just street.
Can I ask a dumb question? What's a Bodega?
Oh my gosh. This is a really important moment. A Bodega is like one of those little stores you go into in New York where there are lottery tickets, cigarettes, magazines, snacks. And they're everywhere.
I just didn't know the name of it. No, you do. And Grandma, I heard Grandma and Grandma and mom and dad watch Girls and they're cool with it. Everyone.
They hide their eyes maybe a little bit. But every once in a while. Because I've wanted to do this for so long. They have had a long time to wrap their head around the idea of me playing someone else. So every time I try to prepare them for something, they say, we know you're acting. We're like you're acting with a wink.
Yeah. Exactly. You're acting but it's yeah. Anyway. Thank you for coming in. This is such a pleasure. I feel like I could talk to you all day. Love the show. Thank you so much. Good luck on the Golden Globes.
Thanks.
