Hey guys, Baruch here with Young Hollywood and we're covering everything from fashion to french fries with Megan Hilty in New York.
Listen when you lose it all, when you lose it, that you can't lose anymore. There's no cure.
Congratulations on your new album, Megan.
Thank you.
Now, the songs that you're singing on this new album are kind of different than the ones that you sing on Smash, right?
Well, most of the things I sing on Smash. It's it is actually a lot more like the pop tunes that I cover. It's much more like adult contemporary than it is It sounds really serious. Yeah, no, it is, it's kind of a serious album. I didn't really mean for it to be, but it was it turned out to be very personal and and a little serious.
I've heard you say it almost feels like a breakup album.
It does, yeah. And I didn't mean for it to be like that either. It it was originally going to be an album of covers, uh, and very specifically songs from the movies, like from soundtracks that I love. The label kept, uh, sending these original songs over and so many of them worked that we totally abandoned the the the original concept and went with that.
Now, how would you say your own character in real life is similar or different from Ivy on the show?
Well, I identify with her because and I think everybody can identify with the feeling of being stuck in a job and and feeling like nobody's realizing your full potential. You know, um, she's just willing to do a little bit more to make her dreams come true than I am.
What's the weirdest job that you had before you became the Smash success?
Oh man, I I never had any weird jobs. I just did everything. Like I when I was doing dinner theater at night for like nothing, I would I was a waitress during the day. I did retail. I walked dogs. I you know, did all kinds of
Jack of all trades.
Yes. Yeah, but nothing too weird.
Marilyn plays a very big role, Marilyn Monroe in Smash. When you were younger, did you, as as a little girl, did you ever look up to Marilyn as an icon?
No, I didn't. I actually thought it was kind of a cliché for blondes to love Marilyn because I didn't understand who she was. I just thought people loved her because they wanted to look like her. Uh, and be as beautiful as her or something like that. And so I was like, eh, uh, that's not for me. But it wasn't until I read a biography on Arthur Miller that I started to find out about her personal life and that's what I found fascinating. And then I I started to understand why people loved her.
On the show, we see a lot of the drama behind the drama going on on Broadway. You, of course, have had an amazing Broadway career. How dramatic do things actually get behind the scenes?
Well, they can get pretty dramatic. I have to tell you though, I mean we're doing we're not doing a reality show. We're doing a scripted drama, so we do sensationalize a couple things. Um, and do things that are completely absurd that wouldn't actually happen, but I'm sure they took some liberties on E. R. too. You know, and private practice, you know, exactly. Yeah. Exactly.
How about behind the scenes on the show itself? What's the what's the the camaraderie like between all the cast members?
Oh, it's great. Everybody, we're all just a bunch of goofballs. So the cameras go off and we're all just acting like a bunch of idiots.
What's the funniest thing that's happened behind the scenes?
There there isn't one instance, but um, me and Kat are always trying to make people laugh. We start singing off key and start just
See, I feel like that would be hard for you.
No, no, no, it's wonderful. It's a whole lot of fun.
Now you've had a lot of amazing costars from Uma Thurman to Jennifer Hudson. Who is your favorite person to costar with on the show?
Oh man, I I don't know cuz we have had a lot of really amazing, uh, guest stars. I mean, Bernadette Peters who plays my mom has been like my idol my whole life. Um, and so getting to do all that stuff with her is amazing. But we just had Sean Hayes too, who is one of the greatest people on the planet. He's just so kind and lovely and hilarious. So it was really, really great working with him too.
In your own life, Megan, I know that you like to wear a beautiful dress once in a while. You're really known for your fashion. What about when you're on the red carpet? You know, of course, you have to keep it fresh every time. But is there something in your closet from your own personal wardrobe that you recycle?
First of all, am I really known for my fashion? This is the first time I'm hearing it.
I think so. I think you are. I, a little birdie told me that you just want a who wore it better in one of the magazines.
I did. But I didn't even know that.
Well, I think that qualifies as fashion icon.
Well, okay. Icon. Now we're going to icon status. This is fantastic.
Why not? I mean, I like your dress right now.
Thank you. Why not? Um, I recycle everything though. I'm Listen, every lady does.
You mix it up? Yeah. Now, you've got a lot of fans on Twitter and one of them sent me a question to ask you. Very important business. Uh-huh. At Bailey Ford 2016. What is her favorite brand of ketchup and favorite restaurant to get french fries?
Heinz Ketchup. And I just had the most amazing truffle french fries in uh, in Chicago, uh, at a place called Pop. It's a champagne bar and they have these truffle parmesan cheese um, and it's oh, yeah. They were amazing. I wouldn't mind some right now. Yes.
