Actress, social media star and now author, Shay Mitchell is busier than ever.
But of course, she made time to catch up with Young Hollywood right here in New York City.
Shay, how's New York treating you?
It is so good.
I brought some LA sunshine for you guys.
I don't know if you noticed, but.
Thank you, thank you, we're enjoying it.
Yes, good.
What's your favorite thing to do when you're in the city?
Um, my first stop is to my favorite pizza place.
There's quite a few actually, so it depends on what mood, you know, if it's fancy dish, all of that.
But I always have to have pizza for a first stop in New York.
I mean, and then just walking around, it's so beautiful here and it's great to finally be able to walk around.
You've got so much going on right now.
What unifies all the projects?
Honestly, I think just like my passion for every single thing that I do and especially with this book, it's like my baby that's come to life now and today it being out in all stores.
I'm really excited about it.
All right, let's talk about the book.
How much do you identify with Sophia?
Um, I mean, honestly, all the characters are sort of loosely based on either Michaela and I or girls that we know or stories that we've heard and all kind of melded into one.
Now, Sophia is really trying to make it in Hollywood.
Was there ever a point where you really hit a wall in this business?
I mean, I think it's just the whole audition process before landing Pretty Little Liars, you know, you're constantly going out and out and out and sometimes you book them and sometimes you don't.
At the end of the day, everything happens for a reason.
So, what kept you going through that whole process?
I think just doing what I loved.
I mean, even if I didn't get the job, I still loved acting.
You know, I loved the whole process.
So, I mean that's what keeps me going even now.
So the process itself was fun.
Exactly.
So how did Pretty Little Liars change your life?
Well, it made me a lot busier.
I got to meet a lot of amazing people and have these wonderful experiences and I mean I owe that to the show.
Speaking of amazing experiences, you just wrapped a shoot with Jennifer Aniston.
Yes.
What was that like?
It was incredible.
I mean, it was a dream come true to be able to work with such an amazing director, Garry Marshall, and then with that ensemble cast, I mean, it doesn't really get better than that.
Did she give you any good advice?
I mean, just watching her, she's such an amazing professional and she's so wonderful to everybody on set and it was just really nice to see that.
Now, a couple of years ago, you said that you were studying Spanish to help out with some roles.
How's that going?
Yes.
Um, yeah, you guys remembered.
Um, you know, I'm still in the process.
We're going to pull up there and I'm going to have a stone again.
Hola, como estás?
That's about as far as I've gotten so far.
Not bad.
The accents coming along.
But I will be, I will be getting better.
Yes.
What role has social media played in all of this success?
I mean, it's been huge.
They've been the ones that really launched our show into being such a social media phenomenon.
And I think worldly, too.
Internationally, it's wonderful to be able to speak to the fans from all over the world.
So many fans on social, but in person, what's the craziest thing a fan has done to get your attention?
Um, I think when they're just very familiar with my characters, so I could be walking in the grocery store and they just, you know, jump from behind and I'm like, hey, and they're like, hey, um, how are you?
And I'm like, oh, wow.
Wait, have we met?
Okay, no, but you know, you think they get really familiar with the character and feel like they know her.
So, those are always interesting.
And they talk to you as if you really are her.
Yeah, as if I'm Emily sometimes.
So, I just have to make that separation, but I mean it's wonderful knowing that they're so, you know, they love the show so much.
It's flattering, right?
Exactly.
Now we got a bunch of Twitter questions.
All right.
Okay.
I've got one for you here from Shay Mitchell fans, and this fan is based in Spain.
And they want to know and I think they're referring to Sophia here.
They wanted to know how would you describe your character in Bliss in three words.
Ooh.
Passionate, um, hard working and loyal.
Sounds like you.
Kind of.
Shay, congratulations.
Thank you so much.
Nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you too.
Nice to meet you.
