Young Hollywood

Welcome to Young Hollywood, you guys. Today I'm with some faces that you know and love, the cast of Love, Simon.

Guest

Sometimes I feel like I'm always on the outside. There's this invisible line that I have to cross to really be a part of everything and I just I can't ever cross it. Second guest: Me too.

Young Hollywood

At Young Hollywood, we have a motto. It's not about age, it's about attitude. And I know that this film also has a motto, that everybody deserves a great love story. So, maybe we can start here and work our way down. What is your personal motto if you had to choose one?

Guest

Honestly, YOLO. Second guest: I would say, take it easy but take it. Third guest: No matter what hurdles life throws at me, I get to choose how to get over them.

Young Hollywood

I like that. Fourth guest: My general thing is like get it, get just do it. I don't know.

Young Hollywood

Catherine, you were in our Young Hollywood studio not too long ago. My favorite band was Can I say artist?

Catherine

Yeah, sure. Lady Gaga.

Young Hollywood

Oh, and she inspired you to go into acting, right?

Catherine

Yeah. Yeah.

Young Hollywood

Then that interview was tweeted by Lady Gaga. She tweeted to you, I believe. And then, if this is correct, you went on to Ellen. And Ellen saw the Young Hollywood interview and got you tickets backstage to meet Lady Gaga.

Catherine

Yes.

Young Hollywood

So, are you guys like BFFs now or what's the deal?

Catherine

Oh, um I don't know why. Um, yeah, so I have a lot to thank you guys for. That was uh that was actually crazy because that tweet, I don't have Twitter either, but um that tweet that whole thing happened while we were shooting one of the scenes for Love, Simon and it was actually the night my agent came and she said, have you seen this? And I went back to my phone and there were all these messages and then I saw it and I I don't know, it was just it was a it was a weird moment. I didn't really know how to react, but uh I just recommend if you've if you ever get a chance to see her live, you should because it's it's another experience.

Young Hollywood

Well, we have to talk about the movie because um I was just saying I saw the screener for it about a week ago. I cried three times, but laughed more than I cried. So that was really nice. And I just love how this is such an important topic, but it's approached in such a modern and really revolutionary way, I think. Um, for you guys, when you got this script, what was it that just grabbed you?

Guest

I think for me it was when I read it. I I I loved it and then on top of that, um it was being made by people who really cared and really understood how to tell this story. And I think you really feel that. Second guest: I was drawn to this story just based off the language because I think that's so so many times people say things that can be insensitive a lot like Simon's dad not realizing that he was being insensitive and I think that this is a great way to educate people on that and I just had to be a part of it. I was like, yes queen. Third guest: That's not to say that this film is representative of every LGBTQ experience but it's um it is a it's a step and that's not and also, I mean, we as actors are not representative of the entire LGBTQ community. You know, we're just telling the story, but just to be able to um be in a position to that is, you know, it's potentially uh it's potentially helpful, I think is is um just an exciting prospect.

Young Hollywood

When you guys were in high school, what was your thing?

Guest

I feel like personally, I was a bit of everything and that for me, I think throughout school was such a big deal. It was like I I didn't fit into one group because you do, you break off into like clicks and it's like, oh the sporty people, the nerdy people, the the popular group, whatever, and it's it's hard when you don't specifically fit into any one of those boxes. So for me like that was a huge part of me like going through school and I think I found a little bit more comfortability and freedom in my final years of high school because I went to a different school that was like gifted and talented, which sounds a lot more like kind of precocious than it actually actually was. Second guest: I went to art school growing up and and I started in theater when I was 10 and so for me it's always been a theater kick. I wouldn't say that I ran in any one particular group. It was kind of a I sort of floated around from group to group. Um so it was kind of fun to get back into high school and then pretend and have this like great friend group.

Young Hollywood

Well, congratulations on the movie. It's so amazing and so great to see you all. Thanks for being here.
