Nikki Novak here for Young Hollywood backstage at the Pantages Theater. We're here to talk to the stars of Jeckyll & Hyde. Constantine Maroulis and Deborah Cox. Let's say I'm gonna get a little Jeckyll & Hyde going in me. What are you teaching me here?

Oh, I don't know. I mean, just because we're close and I, I will, I will give you this. So, we have to maybe work on your Hyde. So, I think it really starts with, you know, like being down here and it's like a really sort of, you know, predatorial thing and then it's just the pop into the camera like that. The eye pop and then you have your Hyde a little bit.

Obviously there's nobody here right now. But when you look out that first moment what's that like when there

It's just exhilarating. It's profound. I can't put it into words, you know. There's just something that happens that's magical. Looking out into the audience.

And let's say you could have anybody sitting there. Any one person. Really?

Yeah. Oh, I'd say my father. You know, he's not been well for many years, so it would be nice to have him get a chance to see me perform which he doesn't uh really get to do ever. So.

Constantine taught me a little Jeckyll & Hyde. He taught me how to get into character. So can you teach me how to do a little Lucy? A little Lucy.

Well, you just got to know how to move your hips. And

Can you do that?

Oh yeah. There you go. Just really.

This is a Grammy nominated singer that I'm singing next to. And that dress is working, ladies. It's fabulous.

Oh yeah. Just feel it. Own it. Work it. Keep it sucked in.

Oh right. Now the last time I saw you at the Pantages, I was in the audience. It was for Rock of Ages that you were nominated for a Tony for.

Thank you. Thank you very much.

And Tom Cruise was in the audience. Two rows ahead of me and I know he went backstage and you chatted with him afterwards. So first of all, how did that go down? I know he was he was researching for the film and came to see you. You know. Cuz I mean that's huge. Tom doesn't go to see everybody.

No, that was a big deal and I'm a huge fan and you know, it's just so charismatic and cool and down to earth.

So first of all, let's address what's in the room here. Because, well this is these are the costumes. Okay.

Yes. These are the the wonderfully designed costumes by Tobin Ost, who not only did the costumes but the set design. And then of course, just a plethora of things that I use to prepare for the show. So I got to make sure I have a humidifier.

Now, is that always does that come with you wherever you go?

Always yeah. It's always there. That the fridge and TV are always there. All the makeup.

Fridge and TV. Now, if you had to choose what's the most important? What's the most important?

Probably the humidifier. Okay. As long as we have like Wi-Fi and I can get internet service, it's all good. I don't even need a TV if I have internet, cuz I need to get on Twitter and Facebook and all that stuff.

So you do all that stuff before a show.

Yeah, yeah, we usually tweet or, you know, just let people know we're getting ready to go on live and uh do the show. You know, we're on our pre-Broadway tour. We open on Broadway in April. So uh crazy. It's just it feels like yesterday I was just here. So, you know, this show is um even more challenging for me.

Well, you're playing two roles basically. How many personalities do you have because there's the Jeckyll and Hyde that you're playing, but how many do you,

I have five or six. At least at at least six.

Okay, name a few of them. Who who do we got in there? And what brings it out?

They all end in some sort of uh Greek uh us or something. Okay. Different Greeks. No, uh, you know, I do try to channel a lot of my own life experiences and bring them into the show and

Do you have a Jeckyll and Hyde side to yourself? Do you?

Oh, absolutely. Especially in the morning.

Okay. Okay. So what brings out the Jeckyll and what brings out the Hyde in you?

No sleep brings out the Hyde in me. No sleep. Um yeah, it's a whole different situation you get to not sleep.

How many hours are you get no sleep? I need at least eight hours, but that's never happened. On the road, I'm sure it's really hard.

Yeah. I mean, yeah, I don't get any more than maybe four hours. It's really tough for me to sleep on the road actually because I like a nice warm body next to me.

How is this because it is a it is a show that has been on Broadway before. How is this sort of a fresh take?

Well it's a fresh take because it's um, you know, all the instrumentation, the orchestrations um are very, very different. They they to suit my voice and Constantine's voice as well.

It's a little more rock and roll from whatever you.

It's a lot more rock and roll and soul. A little more hip. Yeah, we've kept the same foundation, the same story, the same premise. We've just sexed it up a bit. It's given it a little edgier, more thought provoking, a little darker. Totally reimagined actually. It's got this edgy modern steampunk uh layer to it, you know. This is a great show, you know. I'm I'm putting my all into it. We have a great cast and uh a great crew. What appears as a normal Victorian silhouette but, oh, there's something else behind it. A little sci-fi.

Bring on the man. Bring on the man. I just had to do that. Oh. Where did that come from? It's on a track.
