Young Hollywood

Hey guys, it's Ali Weisman with Young Hollywood and we're at the Tribeca Film Festival where we're talking with Emma Roberts about transitioning from college into the real world.

Emma Roberts

I just love your work. I just want to smash your head open and take everything in there.

Young Hollywood

That's lovely. It really speaks to me. What does it say?

Emma Roberts

It says wake up, break free from the chrysalis of middle class on we that's imprisoning you.

Young Hollywood

You're paraphrasing of course, huh? Wow, I can't believe we're bantering like this. This is so cool. So your new movie Adult World is about a recent college grad thrown into the real world. Do you think that that makes someone an adult after they've graduated?

Emma Roberts

You know, I actually think people become less of an adult as soon as they're an adult. At least my friends and I have joked about that where it's like you think you're the most mature person on the planet and then you like get out of college and you're 20s and you're like, oh, where's my mom?

Young Hollywood

Do you feel like an adult yet?

Emma Roberts

I mean in some ways yeah, in some ways no, like I live alone and I have a job and like have obligations but at the end of the day, I also am a kid cuz I want to just like you know run around and play and not have to do anything.

Young Hollywood

Yeah. Do you still rely on your parents for things? Are you pretty self-sufficient?

Emma Roberts

I mean, I'm pretty self-sufficient, but I do call my mom like probably nine times a day and text her another five times on top of that. So not totally self-sufficient.

Young Hollywood

Do you tell her about your personal life or do you keep mom out of that?

Emma Roberts

Yeah, I mean, I kind of just tell her whatever I feel like telling her. We're pretty close. So we just tell each other everything and talk about everything.

Young Hollywood

So is mom still booking doctor's appointments, cooking dinner? Is she still very mommish in that way with you?

Emma Roberts

Um, I mean, yeah, when she she lives in New York and I live in LA but so when she visits, yeah, she's like full mom doing everything mode and I let her cuz everyone wants their mom to take care of them sometimes.

Young Hollywood

And the movie was filmed on uh the Syracuse campus and you've gone to Sarah Lawrence. Is going back to school something that you would want to do or would be interested in or fully acting now?

Emma Roberts

Um, I mean, I'm loving acting right now and having so much fun working. I mean, I definitely like always want to take classes and like be able to have that option, but I'm really like loving work right now. So that's what I'm focusing on.

Young Hollywood

If you were to go back, what would be your field of study?

Emma Roberts

Um, you know exactly what I was doing. I love photography and literature that was really fun for me.

Young Hollywood

Do you have a favorite book?

Emma Roberts

I have a lot of favorite books. I would say I have a favorite author more so I love Joan Didion. Um, so she's like my favorite.

Young Hollywood

And you're also really into fashion, I believe. Um and you wore your own clothes for the movie?

Emma Roberts

I wore a lot of my own clothes in Adult World. Yeah. I wore a lot of my own boots, a lot of my own jackets. Um, yeah, I had these Fornetti Baker boots that I wore the whole movie that I thought were they were perfectly beat up for the part. Yes. So, um, I wore those the whole time.

Young Hollywood

Now, did a wardrobe stylist come into your closet and help you pick out things for this character or did you go in and you knew what was right right away?

Emma Roberts

Um, I kind of just brought her like a bag of stuff and was like, here's stuff, I think would be good and she picked from that.

Young Hollywood

Do you have a favorite article of clothing?

Emma Roberts

Um, I love this leopard jacket that I have. It kind of goes with everything and it's good daytime and nighttime, perfect for New York.
