What's up guys? Leslie Roberts here for Young Hollywood on the set of MasterChef with the MasterChef himself, Gordon Ramsay.
Gordon Ramsay, TV shows, Michelin stars, restaurants. Now I'm in your pantry at MasterChef, amazing.
I know. So it's been an amazing journey. Also, there's something quite unique about those amateurs that step up to the professional world and then officilally produce something that you'd never expect when you first saw them three months ago. That's the exciting part for me.
Did you think when you first started it? I mean, you are a veteran of TV shows so, but did you think this one you'd be around seven?
It's funny because when I first started cooking, um, and I had my first restaurant in London, uh, one of my first big ever TV appearances was judging MasterChef Junior in the UK, uh, back in 1998. So I got really excited about it. Got nervous, would you believe? Um, on the telly. Um, yeah, I know, but I just ignored what was going on with the, uh, television and just focused on the talent. So how ironic is that now? I mean, brought this competition to the US, um, and here on Season 7. But, it's all about the talent. It's sort of like an American Idol in the cooking world.
Chef Idol.
Exactly that. Also, you know, different walks of life, from school teachers to paramedics, to firefighters, to secretaries, to tank drivers. It seems to bring the best out of everybody. So we work with them, we push them uh to great heights. We have some ups and downs, but we put them back on their feet.
Well, coinciding with MasterChef 7, you have an app. Did you ever think, what do Katy Perry, Kim Kardashian and Gordon Ramsay have in common?
Definitely not singing in my front. Um, so the app's been a huge dream come true because it's starting off from this little neighborhood bistro, then you become a popular restaurant, then you start expanding, then you start expanding this empire. But then I put something in this app that no other app has in a way that we have Chef duels. So you could be in New York, I could be in London, we could wake up in the morning and we could go against each other. We live and die by the Michelin Guide. That's our sort of number one critique. We put something called the Wishlin Guide into this app. So if you don't play and the restaurant's not, you know, continuous that sort of standard, we're gonna take a star away. So it's quite quirky, but really cool.
If you weren't a chef, you could do it all over again. Probably an athlete back in your day. Would that be your route or what would you be?
Um, I love the military. I love that discipline. Also having been to Afghanistan and seeing the bond and the respect and the amount of work that goes in there. Yeah. I suppose the ultimate dream would have been a pilot in an Apache helicopter. Nice. Yeah, firing guns with my eyes blinking and I went up in a fighter jet once and just had the most amazing time.
What's your favorite thing to cook?
Uh, you know, depends, depends what kind of mood I'm in. It depends who I'm with.
You're with me and you're in your mood right now.
So, with you, 'cause you're quite feisty, spicy. You know, I'd get some amazing Uni.
Sea urchin. I hate Uni.
You haven't let me finish it. You just said, I hate it. Let me finish. I haven't told you the dish. Don't be so defensive. Um, so I'd make the most amazing pasta with some chili, uh, scallions, and then I'll fold in a little bit sea urchin butter. You wouldn't even taste that Uni. But it'd be a really nice spicy seafood earthy flavor. Okay. You wouldn't even know Uni's in there. And don't be so rude about something you haven't tasted.
Well, I do I hate Uni. I adore you.
Yeah. But Uni and I don't have a great relationship.
Yeah, but I wouldn't tell it was in there. So you'd trick me.
No, I'd surprise you. Oh. And you say, Oh my God, Gordon, that's fucking delicious. I'd say, Yeah, I know, Leslie. I got sea urchin back.
Then you'd puke.
And I'd look after you. Then I'd make sure you're better. And then we'd fall in love.
Then we'd fall in love. Jesus. What?
Well, yeah, maybe. You never know.
In another life.
Another life. Yes. Okay.
