Hey, what's up, guys? Young Hollywood is here at the London Hotel in Los Angeles where we are hanging out with the Netflix cast of Lost in Space. I'm sitting down with Mina Sundwall and Maxwell Jenkins, who star in the new Netflix series, Lost in Space. Hey guys, how's it going?
Hello.
Hi.
So, I didn't know that there was an original Lost in Space series from 1965. Did you guys know that and get to research it at all before you started the show?
I knew about it after I heard about the reboot. Um, neither one of my parents are American and it's a very kind of American novelty, and so I never really grew up with it, but as soon as we heard about the reboot, of course, I did all my research.
Yeah. What about you, Max?
Yeah, I actually got the opportunity to meet and become really good friends with Bill Mumi, who's the original Will Robinson.
You're kidding.
Yeah, and um, like we text about Infinity Wars. I sobbed. But yeah, it was really good to become friends with him. I mean, we bonded over music and comic books and we talk all the time about Bucky and Captain America. So.
Yeah. What what were what were your auditions like for this show? Tell me about the process and what that was like.
My audition for this show was the scariest audition I've ever done in my life. I went to do the scene. It was me and two other girls waiting in a room. I went in to do the scene and I thought it was fine, but when I came back out and we were all waiting, our showrunner, Zach Estrin, who I didn't know at the time, told the other two girls that it was fine. They could go home, but he looked at me and said that I'd actually messed up the lines so badly that they were printing out another version of the script for me to look at. Um, and he asked me to look it over again and then, you know, come back in when you're ready. And so, at this point, I'm like, having an internal panic attack.
I know. I'm grabbing my dad for dear life. Oh my God. Did you think at that point? You're like, "Oh, there's no way I got this."
Yeah, no, I thought I'd completely bombed it and that I would never get another shot and I was you can ask my mother. I mean that Skype call was very dramatic.
That's so cool. What about you, Max?
Yeah, I came home one day and I found the script on our table. And I was like, "Mom, mom, what's this?" And she's like, "It's a show that your dad used to like." I mean, we're we passed on it because I don't want you away from your friends that long. I was like, "Mom, this is really cool. I grew up loving robots, sci-fi, anything like this." So we taped it and I was actually in Toronto. And we heard about that and I was like, well, I just hope the spacesuits blue like Spock's.
That's a great reference.
And then it was.
And then it was. Wait, let's talk about the robot. Everyone's talking about this robot on the internet. Some people are saying he's like really hot.
I know. Yeah. It's the amount of memes that's like he thick. The fact I just retweeted it Tinder called out the robot on their on their Twitter. I lost it. Don't swipe. Don't swipe. Don't swipe. No, no, no. Um, no, but yeah, like my mom's friends are like, "Max is Max is really good in that show, but think you can set me up on a date with that robot?" I'm like, You're married.
And you're like his best friend in the show, right? So what's that like to do scenes with the robot in the show?
The robot is a lot like my two pitbulls back at home. Uh, they're like, yeah, they're sweet, they're loyal, they're fierce protectors, but they get a bad reputation and the relationship between Will and the robot was kind of like that.
What is it like, um, for both of you shooting with all these special effects? Is there just a lot of green screen fun going on in the show?
It was a big learning process throughout shooting the whole season of seeing the difference between acting with emotions and and feeling the character and then also putting that with another layer that's, you know, this is your mom dying, and this is a massive robot fight and so now act.
I was actually on a panel with uh, Ezra Miller. He was like, "You know, once you forget about all the money that they're spending on this show and everything like that, all the high stakes and stuff, it's really just playing pretend and being a kid again." It made it much easier after that.
Yeah, it helps you relax a little bit, you know, just have fun with it.
Yeah. And plus you get to pretend you're playing with a giant robot that's defending you from every possible thing imaginable, so.
What do you guys like to do for fun when you're not shooting? I know you shoot in Vancouver, right? Yes. And then do you go back to Chicago and you go back to New York? Yeah. And what do you like to do for fun?
In my spare time, I play Mandolin in a band. We're called Cowboy Jesus and the Sugar Bums. It's a long story. Um,
As you do.
To some to sum it up, to sum it up, my dad wanted to name me Cowboy Jesus when I was being born. Also odd. And when I pitched the idea, I was having a giant Frappuccino.
Oh, what about you? What do you like to do in your free time?
Um, I love to cook. I really do. Um, I'm really interested in international foods and experimenting with different things. I love, I mean, I have a super big sweet tooth and I think when you make it yourself, it tastes so much better. So,
Absolutely.
Yeah, no, I spent a lot of time cooking with my mom.
Well, thank you guys so much. It was so great to meet you both. Can't wait for the second season.
Thank you.
Thank you so much.
Thanks, guys.
