Nikki Novak here for Young Hollywood in the Oval Office, in the big man's chair.
Well, actually I'm on the set of 1600 Penn, but either way, I'm about to talk to the President.
I am here with the President in the White House, in the President's bedroom.
I'm here with Jenna Elfman, great to see you.
I'm here with Jason Winer, the co-creator of the show.
I'm here with Josh Gad, one of the stars of 1600 Penn, Bill Pullman.
How are you?
Very good.
This is, this is access, like rare access into the White House.
Yeah.
I'm assuming this is wardrobe.
This is definitely wardrobe.
Would you ever wear a rose type paraphernalia on any of your own sort of attire?
Um, I think my fashion sense is a bit different.
I think it probably skews a little edgier.
The reason I have you standing here in the hallway, Every political show has a walk and talk.
Yes.
West Wing.
Yes.
And us, you're right.
I've noticed the bedside book choice of reading is The Seduction of Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Is that yours, or is that Jenna's?
That's Jenna's side.
Okay.
That's, that's her side of the bed.
That's my side over there.
Is it hard to remember lines and do the walk, the speed walk at the same time?
It is very hard.
Like, I can remember the lines and then I'll walk and I'll fake, you know, like I'll fake the rest of the line.
But, it's very hard to I usually have to stop before I finish the sentence.
So this is your second term, basically.
You played the President in Independence Day.
Yes.
What are you hoping to accomplish with this term of your presidency?
Well, you know, this is um, a great chance to uh, inhabit a world that I didn't have the time for in my first term.
I wouldn't describe myself as presidential.
Napoleonic.
Really?
But not presidential.
Well, how so?
Well, I'm very small.
And yet, I like to bark orders at other people.
Do you?
I do a lot of pointing.
You do.
I do a lot of gesticulating.
Okay.
And yet, I'm, I'm in a compact package.
So should we do like a little improv?
Yeah, we totally.
Let's pretend I'm the President for a second, okay.
Okay.
Mr. President, you look so beautiful today.
You look Thank you.
Thank you so much.
Far different than you've looked in previous episodes or in your films such as Independence Day.
I do look quite different, don't I?
Yes.
Do you think even though, you know, I'm going to be in the Oval Office today, do you think that, um, do you think that this my dress, give me a political answer.
Does my dress look like a tapestry?
Does it look like it belongs in the White House?
The political answer is no.
The truthful answer is yes, absolutely.
Okay.
So for example, if I was to mug to the camera and I wasn't supposed to, and you were my director, how would you bark an order at me to stop?
I would say, why don't you sit back.
See, I would speak in an appropriate volume though.
Okay, but I feel like this is my best light right here.
Well, then, you know what?
I would encourage you to take your moment in that light.
And then I would say, you know what, we've got that.
Let's try a different version where you're not sitting forward.
Oh.
You I nailed that one.
Yeah.
How's that?
That's great.
See, now what I would do in the editing room is only use this part where you're leaning back.
And what if I came to you afterwards and said, you cut out the best part?
Too late, it already aired.
This looks very much like the White House.
I feel, I almost feel like I'm there.
But have you, have you made a trip there before?
I haven't been in the bedroom of the White House, uh, the first and second, uh, but I, I am, um, I have been, I went there when we screened Independence Day.
Now if you could rebelliously, like nobody was watching and you could go into any room in the White House.
I really wanna go up to the residence.
I'm so curious.
Because it's like how much of that is, is it truly feel like it's your own?
If you could have full access to the White House, what would be the first thing you would do?
It would be a two for one.
I would go to the bowling alley and just I didn't even know there was a bowling alley in the White House.
There's an absolute bowling alley and then I would go to the Situation Room and start making prank calls.
Like does the residence in the White House truly feel like your own residence?
Do you actually feel like you can get privacy anywhere?
Right.
Is it off limits to Secret Service or are they dotted in the hallways of your residence hallways?
And then I would then I would pay the price.
Then the country would pay the price.
Who would you call?
Like I'd call Russia and like and just create chaos.
If you're in a fight with your husband because if you're in a marriage, you fight sometimes.
Right.
Then you're in your sweats and your hair and it's like one of those late night, you know, mascara moments and you're fighting in the hallway.
They're like Secret Service there going.
Just kinda looking left and right.
You get really good at being inconspicuous.
I'm sure.
Yeah.
Then I'd call North Korea and pretend that I was Russia and then like I'd just get everybody involved and it would just, it would be a dark night.
And what's it like to be a Secret Service guy in this private, intimate moment you're just like,
We were in the middle of doing press in New York City and they said, okay, this might not happen, but in an hour it may be that we're going to put you in a taxi going to a skyscraper and up to the top where there's a helicopter that will take you to LaGuardia and then you'll get on a shuttle and you'll fly to DC and then you'll get driven to the White House and you're gonna watch the movie with the President.
And so that was a long hour.
Wow.
And it happened.
Welcome to our kitchen.
Thank you.
This is our kitchen.
This is where we have breakfast, lunch, sometimes dinner.
Yes.
Um, And this is the, this is the family.
This is the family.
This is the family that's slightly dysfunctional.
Slightly dysfunctional.
It's always good to have a full stack of pistachios on your in your house.
Now, if you were gonna run for president, what would your campaign slogan be?
Um, it's time we had a Jew.
I think just based on that alone, I would vote for you.
Thanks.
And the delivery.
Well, yeah, you gotta give it a little uh, Can I revise the slogan?
Let me try again.
Go for it, yeah.
I think you did really well with the first one, but.
Why not a Jew?
Like that.
Cause you wanna just ask, maybe.
And then, maybe make people feel a little guilty that they haven't voted for a Jew yet.
Any New Year's resolutions?
I haven't even gotten that far yet.
Do you have, you, have you made them in the past?
Do you generally make them or?
Oh sure.
I think it's nice, you know, you always have a moment where you can pretend it's a new beginning by an arbitrary date line, you know, moment in time.
The most luck I've had is when I've taped it to the dashboard of the car.
I'm not good at making resolutions.
I'm not good at keeping the resolutions I didn't make.
Now, I wanna say it's to, to shed a couple of pounds, but that's my New Year's resolution every year.
So maybe it'll be something more original this year like, shed a couple of pounds every other week.
I don't make them because I put so much pressure on myself for the rest of the year.
It's just a matter of like do you make it past five days?
Like your resolutions go into February or do your resolutions end about January 4th?
That should be my resolution.
Like stop putting so much pressure on yourself all the time.
There you go.
Should we do the Presidential photo op handshake?
All right.
Thank you so much for interviewing me.
When does the handshake get awkward?
It never does.
It never does.
No.
