I'm Oliver Trevina here on the Sony Studios lot, about to visit the set of The Goldbergs. Should be interesting. I'm on set of The Goldbergs with this young man, Shawn Giambrone. Yes. How are you?
Oh, I'm doing swell.
I'm here with Troy Gentile. I'm here with Wendy McLendon Covey. I'm here with the lovely Hayley Orrantia. Jeff Garlin, I'm here with him. How are you?
I'm good.
That was a very sexy look you gave our camera. And freeze. Now it's gone from sexy to weird. In a few seconds. Now it's sad. Alright, ask me your questions because the interview's got 12 more seconds. Okay. How is it being in The Goldbergs? It looks it looks a lot of fun from our angle.
It's a hell of a lot of fun from my angle.
That's brilliant. I'm loving it. The show is obviously about creator Adam Goldberg's life. If you could sum up Adam's life in one word, what word would it be? How would you describe his life in one word? Uh. If you could sum up his life in one word, what springs to mind? What would you say?
What kind of stupid ass question is that?
I've asked it to everyone and everyone's given me an answer. So give me an answer, Jeff.
Of course they have because they're happy to work with idiotic questions. Uh, outrageous? What the fuck is that?
They said outrageous. They said loving. They said because the family the the
One word. You give me as many words as I want.
Oh, you're right. Let's ask. If I could give you if you could sum up Adam Goldberg's life as many words as you like, Jeff. What would it be?
I'm sure he's done his best to contribute to the world we live in. They're loving. Loving. It's a very loving family. And the way they show it's a little bit different, but loving is the best way to describe The Goldbergs.
Okay. How would you describe Adam Goldberg's life in one word? So you want a one word?
I got it. I got it and I'll take it. I got one word coming. I'll take it. Chaos.
That's good. There's a lot going on. It's pretty outrageous. Okay. Outrageous. Have you spent a lot of time with Adam?
I have. And he comes around the set and he shows his old videos. So it's just all this inspiration that you can just gather from it to try and match my my character to him.
Perfect. I wasn't going to ask this but I'm going to ask it. If you could pick one kid to keep out of the three. Who would it be? This is Sean.
I knew you were going to say that. I would say that. Don't tell the other two. I've not met the last one either. I've met Haley and she was lovely but just Sean, you've got to keep him. He's a keeper.
I'm Murray. I play the part of Murray Goldberg.
You did not Murray Goldberg. But you played the part.
I played the part. You play it well, you're funny.
Thank you. You are funny. We knew that before The Goldbergs. Yes, I I I hope that I've laid evidence of funniness. Yeah, I hope. I I don't know.
Oh I think you have. And I'm not just saying that. Funny man. Um this show is set in the 80s and you're one of the few cast members that know the 80s.
Yes. Yes, I graduated high school in 1980. Yep. I started comedy
Okay.
in uh 1982. And the show's based in the 80s.
Yes. You are not from the 80s.
No.
You are too young.
I'm too young. I was born in '93.
I am too old.
I've learned a lot about the 80s. A lot about fashion.
Okay. Clearly.
Yes, there's some stuff that I like. Like high-waisted shorts are really cool to me, but the jelly shoes are the worst in my opinion. They're like the see-through but glittery type sandal.
I'll try not to wear those.
Yeah. I'll try not to wear those.
So if you enjoyed being a family in the 80s?
I have, cuz as you can see there's amazing pop culture around us.
There is, there is. And um some of my favorite movies were created like I think behind the door is a Star Wars poster.
There is. Star Wars bed sheets. Oh, I forgot about the Star Wars. That's one of my favorite movies.
Well there you go. What was your favorite part of the 80s? What do you miss about the 80s?
About the 80s? Record albums. I have um all my vinyl to this day.
Brilliant.
And some of my Duran Duran albums still have lip prints.
From you.
From me. From when I kissed my album covers with lipstick on. Hoping that the people
Thinking they come to life.
Yes.
Um any favorite 80s memory that springs to mind?
You know, really losing my virginity.
Brilliant.
Is my you said memory. That would be the memory. Key memory. A lot of memories, a lot of great memories about comedy. Uh, great memories with friends and stuff, but I think losing my virginity. Yeah.
That's a key moment. That's a key moment. Um and now the show is based on Adam Goldberg, the creator.
No, it is based on me losing my virginity.
Okay. If you made a show about your own life, what actors who would you use? Who would play you? And if you were to make a movie about your life or a TV show,
Uh huh.
like The Goldbergs, who would play you? Um, if you were to make a show about your life, who would you like to play you?
Oh my gosh. Well, listen that Scarlett Johansson's got something. I yes. happening. I would have said that. I'd love to play her mother. Honestly, everybody tells me that I look like Ellen Page from Juno. Okay. And I feel like I kind of act like her a lot. Okay. So it might have to be Ellen Page.
I would love to see Vince Vaughn play me.
Vince Vaughn. That's a good one.
Yeah.
Vince Vaughn's really funny. Who would you like to play you? What actor? Who's your favorite actor?
Well, if I could have like a miniaturized uh George Segal, I'd love that.
If we were going to make a show on your life,
Yeah.
Who would you like to play you?
Would I like to play me? Can I can I get that one? No, because I'm around to play me. So you'd have to ask me that question let's say when I'm in my 80s and I go, oh, I'd like so and so to play me.
Or a young you?
No one should play me. It's not interesting for a thing to play me.
I like you, Jeff. All right. Thank you. He's a funny man. The Goldbergs. It's a great show. It's very funny and he's funny.
It is a funny show. I work hard on it. We all work hard on it. And the writing's good. It's good.
He's not nice. Who is suck?
No, no, think about it. Come on. That works that comes.
I'm not gonna lie. They they I can say I can be honest. Yes, they do. I'm not gonna say which ones do but most of them. Okay. Okay. I agree. This has been some very funny ones. Right. Okay. Right. But uh for the most part, ABC by the way, have been great with this show.
Brilliant. Well done, ABC.
Well done ABC. Yeah. And well done, young Hollywood.
Thank you. The way you let me tell you something, young Hollywood just has their shit together.
We do, don't we?
I swear to God. You know, I look and I go there's young Hollywood. Look at them. They're making everybody proud.
