Hey guys, Nikki Novak here for Young Hollywood at San Diego Comic Con with the fabulous Alaine Hendrix. Great to see you.
Thank you, you too.
You look very rock and roll, girl.
Hey, you know, it's Comic Con and I'm on a show called Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll. So.
Have you now, have you now adopted sort of like, did you always? Cuz this is very rock and roll. Have you always kind of had that in you or did the show sort of bring it out a little bit?
Well, I don't know. I me personally, I always feel like I'm a little bit of a tomboy, so I'm like jeans, t-shirts, yeah, it's it's I'm way in my comfort zone. It's good.
This show, um, can't wait for it. FX, first of all, is doing amazing things. It's incredible.
Yeah.
They're it's incredible. But they don't have sort of one specific genre. They kind of just go across the board and they keep it really interesting and they only pick, it seems like certain shows and certain projects, but they really have such a great eye.
I think they do. And I was obsessed with Sons of Anarchy.
Were you really?
Oh, I watched every single frame of every single episode of every single season. I was obsessed. And now, and like now kind of like really learning about FX and being on there. They they pick I think I think shows that have a sense of realness to them and rawness to them and that certainly is our show. Yeah. Because like we're in this crazy setting, but really at the end of the day, we're about a family. A very dysfunctional family. Right. But it's a family. And I and so I think it's I think it's relationships that people can actually relate to.
Oh, I can relate to. You play the girlfriend of Dennis Leary, but you've been together for a really long time.
Forever.
But you kind of like keep him together and it's kind of like, you know, if it wasn't for me, he wouldn't be, you know, he's the fat man, obviously, in this band, but
Well, I I I'm I'm protecting him as best I can, and it's usually from himself. And uh, we can all relate to that. Yeah. And FX has been saying that um, Ava, my character, uh, keeps everybody in the band from killing each other. And I'm like, yeah, I think that sums it up. I think that's pretty good.
I kind of have like roll envy. I feel like you probably have one of the best rolls that's ever been written on television. Did you respond to it that way when you first saw the material and that, and was there an audition process? Did you just get the roll or how did it sort of come about for you?
Well, it was a little different in that I did audition for it, but I just put myself on tape. So, you know, most of the time you go into a room and you go through a whole pro process of auditioning. It's It's can be very nerve-wracking. But no, this uh, they weren't seeing people in Los Angeles. So cuz it films in New York, it's set in New York. So I put myself on tape, sent it in and they like they're like, oh great, they just had a couple of adjustments. I put myself back on tape and then they took the tape through the whole process around to everybody. So I didn't ever have to go in any room. Which like never yeah, and and and short of getting an offer like that's that was so ideal. So yeah, next thing I know, I'm shooting the pilot and then we get picked up and now, you know, here I am.
What music? What kind of music are you into? Are you more like because there's like the younger generation on the show with, you know, the newer music and then the, you know, old school rock and roll. What sort of do you gravitate more towards?
No, I'm I'm old school.
I was just going to almost guess.
I'm old school. Yeah. I'm from Tennessee, so I'm like southern rock, classic rock. That's.
Do you have any top 40 like on your iPod or is it like all like current top 40?
Yeah, I got uh some um some Jesse Jay on there. I like her. I love Pink. You know, she I think she's a a Yeah, and performance-wise. Oh, she's phenomenal. Unbelievable. Yeah. I got some Nicki Minaj. So, I don't know. That's hip, right? That's top 40.
What was the vibe on set? Cuz I feel like was it just like letting it go and did you guys just sort of like I just feel like it would have just been such a great environment.
Yes. Dennis sets the tone and he wants everything to be messy. So, we're constantly. It's kind of like doing theater in the round. So you're surrounded, cameras are going, we're overlapping. It's it's very messy, very um immediate. And um, I think that's I I think that pays off. I think that's what the the magic that gets captured um in the editing room. So.
To use sort of a a pun or an expression. Um, do you have a high note, like a moment in your career that you felt like you hit a high note? On being on set or cuz you've done so many projects. You've always I feel like consistently worked. Um and done great work. So.
I don't know. I feel like I I feel like kind of each step of the way, there like each moment is a high note. I I don't know. I guess in this industry, I kind of feel like being a working actress in of itself is a high note cuz it's can be so challenging, but certainly right now is like a dream come true. It's the best and we're having a ball. So,
How many episodes?
There's 10.
Oh my gosh. I love it. And you guys shot in New York?
We shot in New York.
So which is the best coast?
Ooh, that's apples and oranges. Yeah. But if I had to pick, I'd probably pick New York. Sorry, Los Angeles. No, I'm kind of I'm probably picking New York.
I'm kind of with you on that one. Okay, so between the three, which are you most likely to do? Be a hairbrush singer, an air guitarist, or a steering wheel drummer?
Uh, let me let me figure this out here. hairbrush singer. All females always say the hairbrush singer. Who hasn't? Yeah. I'm either going to do the air the guitar, but then I'm thinking like, yeah, you know. I don't know. That's that's a tough one. Uh, I'll go with hairbrush.
But you sort of get to live out that world in the show, I feel like.
Completely. That sort of like thing being your bedroom, then getting out on that stage and just being. We get to be sex and drugs and rock and roll without having to go through the sex and drugs and rock and roll. And getting in trouble for you have license to have fun.
Congrats. I'm so happy for you.
Thank you. Yeah. I can't wait for the show. I think it's a really good show. Right. And especially for a new show, you know, every show, no matter who, we're all veterans who coming into this. But we still have to find our legs and find the rhythm and find what really works about this show. And and so there's still a little bit about that, but in my experience, I think this is for sure one of the strongest and best first shows I've certainly ever seen.
Do you have a favorite superhero?
Oh, that's such a typical Comic Con question, but. Uh, Wonder Woman. And I don't know if that's common, but I've been since a little girl, Wonder Woman was my was my woman. Yeah, me too.
Hairbrush singer and Wonder Woman.
Yeah, you too. Okay. Exactly.
Okay.
