What's up, guys? Leslie Robbins here for Young Hollywood, joined by Oscar winner and overall nice guy, Mr. Tim Robbins.
It's finally uh uh great to meet my sister. We are brother and sister. Robbins. Correct.
It is, yeah. I mean, have you missed me? It's been a while.
Well, yeah, I've actually never met you, so it's really weird. To finally meet my sister after all these years.
Okay, so speaking of things that people may not know about you, like your passion for hockey, tell me five things that Google cannot tell me about you. And don't tell me that you were in Shawshank Redemption, 'cause everyone knows you're in that movie, 'cause it's on every day. And we love you for it. Five things.
Yeah. I don't know, it knows pretty much everything. Uh, it gets a couple things wrong. I was not in network film projects that I'm apparently attached to that I don't even know what they are. That happens sometimes. Uh, sometimes they say my mom was an actress. She was not an actress. She was a publishing executive. Uh, and a musician. I'm sure there's other fallacies out there. I'm currently uh attempting to be a vegetarian. So, my favorite food is uh asparagus right now. And uh, food I can't stand, uh I don't like green peppers.
Here we are on your stage. You originated this theatre in 1981, right out of UCLA. That's huge. It's still going strong.
And I haven't been able to do it by myself. I've had a great group of actors from the start, their passion was the theatre. And uh, we've maintained that passion throughout the years. We've adapted to different times. We've survived crises, we've, you know, had to go through some economic hardships at times. But overall, the spirit uh has carried the group, the spirit of wanting to to uh do theatre that is important, that addresses issues that are in all of our minds.
Your current project coming up right now, that's tapping into what's happening in the political climate. Full speed ahead. The New Colossus. Correct. Yes.
So, The New Colossus is about immigration and about what it is to be a refugee. It's 12 actors speaking in 12 different languages from 12 different time periods. Taking a journey to try to get to freedom. And their collective story is the collective story of America.
So, you're part of The New Colossus cast. Tell me your story.
My story specifically follows my mother's friend from childhood from a state called Michoacán in Mexico. There wasn't many opportunities to make money and support your family. Little by little they had to go to other towns and other towns, and eventually they realized, economically speaking, the best opportunity was in El Norte, which is the United States. Second guest: I play my mother, Anna Margaret Wong. So, my grandfather was a famous magician during the time of this piece, and his entire family was part of uh his show. In 1943, they were in Malaysia when they were performing and that's when World War II began and the Japanese invaded Malaysia. They had to go into hiding because my Chinese grandfather was an American citizen. Third guest: My story, in particular, is a recollection of the stories that my family has told me um throughout my life about the Vietnam War and the struggles that they went through and how they were basically fighting for their lives in a civil war in their own country.
You have another project coming up. The big man is returning to HBO. Yes, I am. There you go. Here and Now has a great story. Yes. Similar to like what you're doing here, right now, yeah.
Yes. Taking a look at who we are and I think that's an important thing for people that tell stories at this time in our history.
I heard a great story you you told about taking the role of Top Gun. And it was really just for the money. And and it paid for this place for a couple of years. Even when it says Merlin on the on the helmet, you don't know it's you. And then you see Tim Robbins out of the plane with Tom Cruise. Yeah. Wait, he was in the movie? What? What? What?
Yeah. Two days of shooting. And then I was off for the entire summer for three months. And so I went back to LA, we were filming in San Diego, went back to LA, did a play. Funded by my salary from Top Gun.
I would assume Tim Robbins would either be on the cover of Arts and Leisure or politics. This Sunday the cover of the Style section. You've got style. There is, who'd have thunk it. So, what makes you worthy of the Style section? Let's talk about your fashion. I think this now allows you to talk fashion. Do you have style?
Uh, obviously not. That's a shirt from 15 years ago, but maybe that's why I wore it.
