What's up, guys? Jackie Karsch here for Young Hollywood, and we are on the set of The Mindy Project, where we're going to talk to all of the hilarious stars. I read that you're a big Sour Patch fan. So. What?

Yes. Oh my god, this is so nice. I Okay. So I didn't know which variety you liked, so are you watermelon or

This is so nice. I'm not sharing with anybody. These are two enormous bags. I'm I'm so sorry. I just I got to eat them all myself.

What's Mindy like as a boss?

She is like Vladimir Putin. Ooh. She controls everything, she controls all the media around her. Uh, she's had a couple people killed. Um, she's a strong man. She's a classic uh just pot.

What is your strategy when you eat the Sour Patch? Because some people only eat one color first, you know, kind of M&M style or

Oh, I wish I had a kind of a quirky way that I was eating them, but I

You don't like to decapitate?

I don't discriminate. Do you decapitate? Do you decapitate? I put like four in my tongue, let all the sugar dissolve and then just eat it slowly like that.

Oh, I love that. One of my favorite things about your character is it was actually supposed to be an American. Yes. But you're very clearly British.

I'm as British as can be. Yeah, it was written for a Bradley Cooper type, an American hunky doctor. And I was like, well, I'm a sort of a slim British man. Um, and uh yeah, I did it in my own accent and fortunately they loved it and Mindy came and saw it and said that's fine and yeah, here I am four years later.

It's crazy. There's like a whole genre of people that are obsessed with Beverly and like her really outlandish, kind of creepy lines. Oh, I'm so excited to hear that. Are you anything like your character?

Yes. Back in the day, you were a debutant.

I was. I just posted a TBT, throwback Thursday on Instagram, where I had my big giant dress on.

Would you ever go back to those days? Debutant?

No. No. But it's funny because my character on the show is sort of similar to how I am and Colette was also a debutant. And they didn't even know that I was a debutant in real life. So, or they're like reading my biography and just throwing it into the character. I'm not sure. I used to practice so much more restraint than I do now, because I've been so freed by her, saying all these crazy things. And in the beginning I would see these lines and I would laugh, but I would think, Am I really going to say this? But I love discovering who she is, script after script, or Mindy will throw me a line on the set, or David Stassen and I on the set, or Ike, they'll give me these crazy lines. And I think, heck yeah, be free Beverly, go for it. And then in my personal life, I'm more outspoken than I used to be.

Really? Because of your character?

Yes, absolutely.

Wow. Have you ever had someone that spells your name right right off the bat?

No. I've had people pronounce it right off the bat, like after seeing it, which is more I mean, spelling I'm always like, what can you do? But like pronouncing it right, like from seeing it, that's all I'm always like, that's it. Yeah, randomly like later in life, like as I keep going, people are like, Is it Zocha? And I'm like, yes it is. The X is pronounced how most Xs are, like xylophone, xenophobe, Xavia, you know.

Wow. I would never have thought that.

I know, no one does. People are always like, a X? What's your name? Kuumba? I'm like, what?

Bryan Greenberg, you are the newest crew kid here. Was there any hazing done to you?

Yeah, there was a gang initiation where they beat me. Um, that happens a lot on half-hour comedies for the new cast members.

What's your nickname around the set? Are you like Icky Ike?

Daddy.

Big daddy?

Uh, Big Strong Daddy. That's what I like to think that they call me when I'm around. Where's Big Strong Daddy? He's a crafty? Got it.

In the show you're a new mom. What's that like?

I think it's probably, it's been a nice, it's been in my mind a pre like preview of what that might actually be like. Uh practice. It's it's exactly, it's practice. Uh, with many different babies playing the child. Um, it's kind of strange and uh wonderful and it makes me I spend like two hours with a baby and to me it's it's extremely fun but so exhausting and I'm so worried about carrying the small baby that I just can't imagine what a mother actual mothers must go through and it makes me when I'm on a plane and I hear a baby crying with a mom, I have so much more sympathy now than I used to.

Okay, so your character Morgan is a really weird nurse. And I feel like the male nurse is making a comeback.

Yes, it is. You know, we uh for a long time we've been a maligned group and I'm proud to be the face of it. We've had baby steps uh Ben Stiller meet the parents. But now we have uh me and Bryan Greenberg plays a male nurse in the show. So we're trying to bring We're trying to put the Think of a good word. We're trying to put the new back in male nurse.

Is Ike just talking about himself being the hot male nurse? I don't know. He was like putting Greg Focker to shame from meet the parents. Um, no, so how do you feel about the male nurse? I mean, like that's a whole new genre of nurse.

I guess so. I mean, it's hey, it's 2016. It all Everything's good now, right? I mean, you can have hot nurses like Ike Barinholtz out there.

Have you tried to up your funny since being on The Mindy Project? Because you've got it like on the comedy spectrum.

Oh, thank you. I try to find my moments, you know, cuz I can be pretty silly and pretty broad. But when you have a big cast of funny people, you don't want to be the butthole that comes in and is like loud and interrupting people. So we'll everybody will be doing their moments and I'll be like, bam. That's how I do it. Bam.

That's your go-to move.

That's my that's my move. I just throw in a little funny and then go back to doing my thing, pretending to read a folder. That's we we do a lot of that. In the group scenes there's a lot of like looking through folders.

Who's like the biggest joker? Do you ever lock each other guys like in your offices?

Um, Ike, again, it's always Ike. Ike does a thing where he like impersonates different members of the crew. So he'll like, he'll pretend to be like from the wardrobe department and he'll like bust into your trailer when you're like on the toilet. And he'll be and then for no reason and then you know, he'll pretend to be from the sound department and suddenly you'll see Ike down your legs like stroking your legs and putting like a pretend mic on you and he's not from the sound department at all. He's just like touching you and it's like a little it's a little disturbing.

Another thing about Mindy is that she's a super fashionista, but you're also a super fashionista. I mean look at this dress.

What are you wearing today?

I think this is Peter Pilotto. No, Mary Katrantzou. And this is I mean Sal Perez put this outfit together for me. I mean he's amazing, my costume designer. So, normally, I'd be in the writer's room with the other writers who write the show and I'd be wearing a great T-shirt and like sweatpants. I watched Mindy and these fabulous colors. I mean today I have on black and white. But I bought a lot of color because of her and Sal. Oh my gosh. I see all these great And even Beverly, even though her stuff's put together kind of cocky wobbly, I do wear great colors and I wear some of Mindy's old clothes. Oh, yeah.

This show has a blog devoted to what you're wearing. Have you ever looked on that?

I have. Yeah, I think it's great. Like, wow, I look awesome. Well, sometimes I'll be like, oh, I love that dress I wore in season two of The Mindy Project, the Christmas party. I wonder who made it. Instead of bothering Sal, I'll just go on a blog and someone has listed. It's amazing. What I figured out because of her is that fashion is art. Ooh. And you are in a certain mood on a certain day and you wear the art that suits your personality, that suits your mood. And it's really fun.

So on August 19th, you tweeted, Guys, there is no reason to say one, two, three before you take a photo. Just take a million photos. It's not film. Please please retweet. What was that?

Um, I guess this is from my observation that a lot of people their their phone taking etiquette, phone I mean photo taking etiquette has not caught up with technology, which is you don't need to say one, two, three cheese anymore. In fact, you should just get as many photos as you can. It's great. There you go.

Yeah, we have a really raucous, giggly set and I think that really helps. You know, I think comedy really flourishes when people are happy and having fun and not afraid to like try stuff and be a bit dumb. And yeah, it's cool that it's a safe space to do that.

Do you ever feel like you lucked out getting on The Mindy Project?

Oh my god, yeah, it's the greatest It was like threading a very uh specific needle to get on a show as a writer and then have that writer also have been a writer performer on a show that's like my favorite and kind of giving me the same opportunity that she was afforded. It is like it's a one in a billion shot and that's why we have six or seven photos of Mindy all over my house. She's like uh Kim Jong-un.

Kim Jong-un, where you have to have You got to get the Andy Warhol version of Mindy.

Oh my God, that would be great if I had that kind of money. Only Mindy could afford an Andy Warhol print of Mindy.
