What's up guys? Leslie Robbins here for Young Hollywood at the Pantages Theater. Get on your magic carpets. I am taking you behind the scenes of Disney's Aladdin. I see beads everywhere here. Walk me through the bead work here. Everywhere.
Okay, well, this is this is the one of uh Jasmine's attendants. And all of this beading is done either in New York or it's some of it sent to India to be beaded. Yeah. This show is also has whimsical like this is a game show host in the middle of Agrabah. Right.
I am now joined by Mr. Aladdin himself. Yeah. You guys are beautifully animated. The voices are angelic, very Disney-like. It's as it should be.
Thank you. Yeah. It's very, you know, full production value for sure, right? So we didn't skimp going from Broadway here. It's the full full Broadway set. Essentially the same show. Um the costumes are just over 1,000 crystals per pair of pants. It's like ridiculous, you know, so they really sparkle and shine and our sets and everything. So, it's just a huge spectacle. Um and yeah, I mean, you know, Disney knows how to do magic that magic carpet, right? Break. Oh wait, it's magnetic? Yeah, it's magnetic.
Whoa! That's so it doesn't fall.
Correct. Cuz this piece moves on stage as an auto deck piece. So, it just moves on stage and if this falls again, we won't have a show. So, we want to make sure that it stays where it's supposed to be so Aladdin can find it.
You are beautiful, your voice, you look like Jasmine.
Thank you.
And all the little girls in the audience, some of them were dressed just like Jasmine. Being on Broadway as Princess Jasmine. Yeah. Are there words for that?
No. No. No. I'm always speechless. I just don't I never would have thought. Like if you would have told like little Courtney that she would be like playing Princess Jasmine and Aladdin on Broadway, like I would have laughed in your face. You know what I mean? Like it's just it's insane. Yeah.
This costume is one of the tap costumes for the end of Friend Like Me. Yes. Where the audience is overwhelmed and blown away. So, this costume with the jacket, the vest, the pants, and the hat, there are 8,424 rhinestones. Swarovski crystal stones on each one of the costumes. Each man has that 8,000 rhinestones on their costume.
So, what's in this dressing room? When you're Aladdin, what's in your dressing room?
Yeah. Uh well, I got my uh let's see. These I got my juggling balls.
Do you know how to juggle?
I That's part of my routine. It's just sort of like to get me into a good head space before cuz I have to focus, you know, when I'm running and jumping off of buildings and when uh when Jasmine tosses me an apple, like I have to be able to catch it. And so I just practice with these and uh yeah, you know, I just that's what I do.
I don't recall you juggling in the show.
You know, they did have me juggle in the show at one point and I and I they had to cut it.
Because you dropped the ball?
Because well, not It's a good ball. No, because they uh they're like, "Uh, we don't need it and plus we don't have to worry about our understudies having to learn how to juggle." So, exactly. Like this is one of the dervishes in the beginning and he has I can't tell you how many different fabrics are on just this one costume and he just spins around and comes running off and that's that's the extent of this costume on stage.
Wow. But you're in Hollywood. Famous faces are walking through these doors. Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Oh, yeah. She's She's so sweet and uh yeah, she had seen the show on Broadway actually and this time she she brought her uh her husband. Freddie was here and Yeah. Aretha Franklin and, you know, Jimmy Fallon and you've met um Matthew McConaughey and you Mariah Carey, you name it. But I swear to you, Britney Spears that that was like my one person. I was like, And she tweeted about us. So, she loved the show.
So, now I'm going to do the magic. get him up. Now I'm going to rub it and then a genie comes out, right? That's right. Okay, so rub rub rub rub rub. Here he comes. I wish, I wish, I wish. Where's my genie? I have three wishes.
Uh he's not on call yet.
Let's get on it. Yeah. Now now teach me a move. Teach me one of. Yeah, that that works. Can we do that? Wait, is that That's right. Say Say, um, all I got to do is jump.
All I got to do is jump! That's right. Now hold your hat. cuz your hat's going to fall off. So, you got to Yeah.
Wait. I know. I know, you ready? Okay, hold on. Do you trust me? There it is. That's the line. She's got it. Wait, do you trust me?
