Young Hollywood

What's up, guys? Leslie Robbins here. Young Hollywood is with four tennis legends that needed no introduction: Chang, Courier, Agassi, and the man, MacEnroe. It is a champion's showdown here at the Honda Center in Anaheim. Well, I saw you practicing over there. You got a lot of umph in that swing still. You're grunting, you're getting out there. The going between the legs. It's working for you still.

John McEnroe

Oh, yeah. Well, hitting the ball is not the difficult part these days. It's sort of getting to the ball and uh you have to work hard to do that. So, we're figuring it out though.

Young Hollywood

Still still can do it. You still got a little bite in your swing there.

John McEnroe

Yeah, I'm I've got a lot of bite. I uh, you know, I we're playing been playing a bunch of these tournaments. So, my game is sharp and um I got a little anger pent up. I didn't play uh didn't play my best tennis last night. So, I'm going to take it out on Michael Chang tonight in the semifinals.

Young Hollywood

You still have anger in you from all of these years of tennis?

John McEnroe

I have major anger issues. Major. That's what tennis is so sweet. You can get out here and and uh get rid of it.

Young Hollywood

I've been watching you guys forever and it's like you guys never left. And this is almost this is as real as it gets for me.

Michael Chang

Yeah, I mean it's a it's a great set up. Uh you know, Jim's been doing a great job and uh you know, putting together power share store. And uh you know, our last stop here in uh in Anaheim. Obviously, I'm excited about it because it's my hometown. So, um you know, hopefully have a a great crowd and uh hopefully I get uh some good crowd support and uh yeah, I think it's going to be a fun night.

Young Hollywood

It's the finals tonight. You're going for number one. How are you looking?

Jim Courier

I'm looking pretty good. I mean, been playing well. I've been consistent. And so I've been at least uh fighting it out pretty well. But obviously to play Andre for starters is going to be an upset to even win that. So, at least I've come in the last day with the chance to still win it all.

Young Hollywood

You're in perfect shape still. Retirement is treating you very well. How do you maintain this?

Jim Courier

Uh, a lot of decisions. Thousands and thousands of decisions. It's a losing battle at times, but, you know, it gets hard as you get older, but you have to account for everything you sort of put in your body and how you spend your time and I like to do a few things in particularly when it comes to to training, but more than anything, it's just not doing anything in extreme.

Young Hollywood

So, retirement is obviously treating you very well. What are you doing outside of the court to stay in shape?

John McEnroe

Well, uh, go to the gym. I run. Um, paddleboard. I surf big waves, Mavericks. No, that's not true. For me, it's about what you put in your body, how often you put it in and uh and you know, it's again, there's it's not a it's not brain surgery. There's a real science to it.

Jim Courier

He's a liar.

John McEnroe

I'm a liar.

Young Hollywood

Well, this is an interview. You can sort of bend the truth. You stretch it, right? It's kind of part of the deal.

Michael Chang

Uh, tennis is my primary exercise. That's that's what I love to do the most. But, uh, you know, I cross train, like to get on the bike. It's fun. Most importantly, I treat uh food as a fuel, not as a decadence.

Young Hollywood

Give me one word to describe each of your, you know, cohorts.

Michael Chang

Um, let's see. Uh, I think Andre is probably the easiest. Uh, you know, I think it's pretty fair to say he's very charismatic. Uh, you know, Jim, uh, I think he's just a just a workhorse. I mean, if you see his work ethic, it's uh, uh, it's something to be uh, to be admired. Um, you know, John, colorful.

Young Hollywood

Speak of the devil.

Michael Chang

Colorful. Both uh, on on and off the court. He's he's very colorful. So.

Young Hollywood

And let's talk about tour life. How's that treating you?

Michael Chang

Tour life is, well, you know, I've been doing it a long time. So, I guess it beats uh, you know, a real job. Tour life is good. We got in about 2:00 last night from Denver. So, uh, you know, a little late night but I got to sleep in. So, I'm feeling pretty good. I'll be ready to go. But it's fun. We're having a good time. You know, obviously, we're we're not playing week-long events, which which makes it easier for us. You know, uh, you know, most of us have uh, have families and stuff like that. So, uh, you know, it's nice to be able to come out and uh, you know, for a couple of days and then, you know, go back home and uh, rest up in the middle of the week and then come back.

Young Hollywood

What are some essentials you need on that tour?

Jim Courier

Moisturizer. It's a life essential. You got to have it. Coming in from Denver, 5,000 feet. Got to got to make sure you stay hydrated on all levels. The longer trips, you bring a little bit more. Hopefully some good music. But when it's a short one like this, you bring the bare essentials. Facial moisturizer, body moisturizer, hand, feet. All yeah, all of the above. I mean, you know, you get you're a tennis player. You get calloused hands. You got to make sure that you don't uh, you don't lose those. You got to keep them tight.

Young Hollywood

Can you show me how to do the proper serve with that racket?

John McEnroe

No. I am not a I don't know how to serve. That's the worst part of my game.

Young Hollywood

How about a how about a classic backhand?

John McEnroe

A classic backhand is uh control the racket head. So, you don't want a weak grip. You need a strong grip. If you control the racket head, you got uh a good backhand.

Young Hollywood

Okay, let's try. Well, that's not bad. You see the bottom grip? See?

John McEnroe

Yeah. Yeah. Turn it over. There you go. Now you want to pivot the racket up. Now put your left hand on. Go behind it. Yeah. Now you want to step with your right. You want to keep your right elbow close to your body and then dry not that close. And then drive it drive it towards your target. Uh that's not my target. My target's there. We need to spend some time, that's it.

Young Hollywood

How much do you cost an hour for lessons?

John McEnroe

Uh, it depends if it's for charity or not. If it's if it's not for charity, I'm I'm priceless. I won't I won't do it.

Young Hollywood

He is priceless, isn't he?

John McEnroe

Thank you. Thanks. Nice to see you. I want my racket back.
