Pad-Crashing L.A. Kings' Dustin Penner
About this video
Did we come at a bad time?? L.A. Kings forward Dustin Penner is only slightly caught off-guard when we arrive to crash his pad, but being the tough hockey player he is, he quickly shakes it off and shows us around his gorgeous Newport Beach digs! Along the way, we make some discoveries, like his love of laundry, a shelf full of books, and his furry, obedient roommate! Also, see if he'll let us try on one of his Stanley Cup rings and if we can keep his attention long enough to answer some questions on the beach! Hosted by Lesley Robins (@lesleymia).

Hey guys, Leslie Robbins here. Young Hollywood is back in Newport Beach, Cali. I'm spending the day with two-time Stanley Cup champion, forward for the LA Kings, Dustin Penner. First off, I'm crashing his pad.
These guys are idiots. Can I join?
Hey. Oh, thank you. Dustin. You guys don't knock?
Um Dustin Penner is watching The Real Housewives of No, I was just changing. It's DirectTV.
this is awkward. Action. They're defense. They do actually have real problems. Do they eat Golden Grahams and romio and fruit? What?
Saturday. I thought I'd just relax. I like to also mix in some raw meal. It's got a lot of nutrients and uh photosynthesynthesis, I can't even say it properly 'cause of my tooth. I'll try it now. Photosynthesis See, like it's a tough word for me.
What are you selling?
I'm selling an interview.
Okay. I already bought. I already bought the magazines last week. Well, I'm here to crash your pad if that's okay. All right. Introduce me, who's this handsome guy?
If you liked you he talked to you, so.
Oh. Is he flirting?
No, he's not flirting. You'll you'll know when he's flirting.
What made you get a dog?
Um, I've had dogs before. A bunch of cats with my family. My family's had the shih tzu and he's about 16 years old. But I've lived down here for six years and I got to know some of the cops around here. And uh, they told me to get a I should get a police dog because it actually listens. I got tired of cleaning up uh poopin' pee inside my own house.
Well, if he listens, let me see some tricks. What do you got?
You want to see tricks? Here. Ryback. So basically he just listens to what I say. Right back, botts. Ryback, seats. Ryback, botts. Seats. Get blouse. Get blouse. Oh, brow. There we go. There's a couple commands that that aren't aren't supposed to be set around him.
Now he's flirting. It's getting a little x-rated over here. This is the hangout spot, huh?
During the summer and during the lockout, there was definitely some people here.
So is it quieter now that you play all the time?
Yeah, it is. I had had to rent a place in Manhattan Beach. It seemed a little less busy down here. A little more open and there's a lot more golf courses.
You love golf.
Yeah.
And you're pretty good at it, too.
I fluctuate. Like a like the stock market. Uh, sometimes I crash pretty hard.
What happens if you got traded to a team up North?
It's tough. I know. Oilers. Yeah, I didn't do much golfing. Minus 40 degrees Celsius. You'd get cold enough where the the garage actually code panel your garage code, right? No. You know what I'm talking about?
Say it again?
When you punch in your garage code, right? So you can enter into the garage.
Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, the keypad. But you're saying garage. Say it again.
Garage. No, you didn't say it. Garage. Yeah, I don't know. No, garage. You're saying I need some iced tea. This is getting a little taxing. Okay, anyways, it got so cold that it would freeze solid. So I got home at 4:30 in the morning from a road trip and I couldn't get into my house because the keypad had frozen solid. So I had to breathe on it for half an hour with my own breath to warm it up so I could get in my own house.
So this is a gorgeous kitchen. Do you entertain a lot?
It is. It's big. Seating for four or five.
You cooking in here?
I feel like you're reaching. It's it's nice, I guess. I don't I don't do a lot of cooking. I eat really fast if you ask my friends. So I can't really justify the time it takes to make a meal. If I spend an hour, two hours making something delicious, takes me five minutes to eat it and then I spend another 45 minutes cleaning. It seems like a waste of time when I can go to a restaurant. Get the same thing. You know the nice thing about being in the NHL is they have breakfast for us when they get to the rink and they have lunch when we leave. So that takes care of two of my major decisions that day.
I think you have to be one of the funniest guys I've met. It's genius. It's genius. Where does it come from?
It's a collective mix from my mom, my dad and their parents. Yeah, there's different types of humor. I think you form and shape your own sense of humor as you get older. But a lot of it's veiled in sarcasm. And self-deprecation.
Well, we're going to go upstairs. I hope there's nothing embarrassing.
Oh, whatever you say. It's your house. It is. My friend's staying here right now. As you can see, he's a well-kept individual. This is actually I enjoy doing laundry, so I spent some time in there.
You love doing laundry too?
Yeah, I don't let my mom touch it when she comes here. I said, don't touch my laundry. And she actually gets upset. Like she's bleached enough things that don't require bleach.
What's the best thing about doing laundry?
That no one else can screw it up.
This is another guest bedroom. Clean. And I guess what you do when you play in the NHL, you just put up pictures of yourself.
Just kind of a way to keep your memories fresh because playing in the sport I play, concussions come with the territory and you tend to forget things.
Wow. You remember winning both cups?
Barely. Tell people I have books. They probably don't believe I read.
No, he. Yeah. He's very smart.
Well, you didn't have to say that. If you sounds like you're over-exaggerating. Or compensating.
No. One of the only guys in the NHL that graduated college.
I didn't graduate college.
You didn't graduate?
No. I'm two classes shy. I'm going to I'm going to donate enough money hopefully so that they give me an honorary degree.
I see another segment in the works. Penner goes back to school.
Hopefully not. Done and done.
So he has books. I have to ask where are the Stanley Cups? And I see them. Yeah. The team gives you one of those every time you win. Cups. Stanley Cup rings. Can I try a ring on?
Yeah, you can well, obviously that I only won one ring.
Wow. Don't get any ideas that I'm giving you a ring. What finger do you wear it on?
I don't wear it, but it's If you had to. I think yeah, I'm just going to put it on this one.
Yeah. So this is the master suite. If I was a magician, this is where the magic would happen. And uh See the master bathroom. Okay. Clean.
Yeah, it's I don't spend a lot of time here. I can't tell you the last time I came to the bath.
That's a great bathtub. You need to be taking baths in there. All right, where are we going to next? Because this room is very sacred. And we're spending a lot of time in here. Let's go. Look, I don't want to violate the house rules. Was that the only rule? I didn't hear any others.
This is a place I don't go often. The reason being are those stairs.
Well, this is a stunning view.
Yeah, it's nice.
Okay, tighten what kind of toy have you purchased that A, you love and B, you regret?
Probably my uh turntables. I bought them in Edmonton because like I said, there wasn't much of a life outside the house or the rink. Spent a bunch of money to make my basement into a DJ room, to make it sound like a club and have my own turntables. And then I got traded. It didn't have a lot of room for that in this place. So it's sitting in storage.
We need to find a little nook for you to set up that.
See that's the problem. You can't find a little nook to put this stuff in.
You have two guest rooms. Make one of them partly into a You'll get there. Okay, we're in the garage. Big space that has a beautiful car.
I don't spend a lot of time in here. Ryback does in his kennel. And this is a car I bought four or five years ago. I got some bird [bleep] on the side of the window. That was nice. I saw that there the other day.
It's good luck.
That's what people say to put a positive on spin on something that sucks.
Yeah, but it's good luck. To spread positivity. You just smashed your face off a wall, it's good luck.
One of those cars that you really got to squish in to get four people. I can't find anything else I want because I can fit both my hockey clubs and or hockey uh equipment and golf clubs in it.
You almost got your sportsman stuff there. You almost got your words mixed up there.
I know. It's been a long day for some reason. I feel like this has been going on forever. All right, Leslie, you've seen the house now. Now we're going to go to the beach and you know, you're probably used to this because you work in Hollywood, but we're going to go pick up some Ryback. I'm kidding. But yeah, take off your uh your heels there. Whatever they are.
For sure, the guy's really important or famous. He is. And has made himself quite a career out of making those. Yeah. And you just got like a half a foot shorter. See now I'm short.
Well, no, you've always been short. You just it was an illusion before. So you can't really complain coming home to this gorgeous beach.
No, I can't.
This is what me and Ryback do. This is a Saturday afternoon day in the life.
Well, I have a funny little thing. I called it Ponder This with Penner. Sorry. I misquoted you. I think I think this might be fun. Go ahead. I'm paying attention.
I'm an active listener. Would you ever quit hockey to become a full-time actor or comedian?
Well, who's career would I have? Let's pick someone's career. Maybe Will Ferrell. He just seems like he enjoys it. I'm sure a lot of the outtakes. Look at you. I bet that's even funnier than than the stuff we get to see on TV.
Well, during the lockout, you had a lot of time in your hands and you did an internship at Conan.
Yeah, I think we're good.
So was that an actual internship or was
Here.
So was that an actual in
Here.
So was that an actual internship?
Here. I got to teach him. I got to stay on. Yeah, it wasn't an
You're going to make this interview much longer.
It wasn't an actual. Okay, wait. internship. Everything is scripted, but thanks.
Would you take your shirt off in the middle of an interview? No. Sorry. That was just that was a joke. And then would you
Shirt. You came out of the gate hot with two good ones and then you just fizzled. Like just stale. The shirt thing you were supposed to make a joke and that was supposed to be funny. All right, well, thanks for coming to my humble abode. It was uh it was a lot of fun. Look at that. Yep. There's a person laying on your couch right now. Yeah, he's uh he does that he he shows up like bad weather. Never know when he's going to come, but and then it stays for an inordinate amount of time. Well,
No, it's uh time to go. Really? Yeah. Aren't you having a barbecue or something?
It's uh my Saturday's ending. We got a game tomorrow. Time to relax. We I play hockey. No. Yeah. I don't know if you knew that in Young Young Hollywood. I thought we were here for a galaxy play. Yeah, I probably. Okay, cut.
