What's up, guys? Leslie Roberts here. Young Hollywood back on the streets of New York City. I am in Soho right now, about to spend the day with one of New York's favorite guys, left winger for the Islanders, Matt Martin. And he's supposed to show up any second. It's a little rain. Oh!
Hi, Leslie. How are you?
That was a hit. That's what I do. You know that. Well, you lead the NHL in hits right now. Is that the hit?
I like to do it a little harder than that, usually, but that was more of a hug.
Well, let's talk hockey for a second. Part of the Islanders, you guys are on Long Island. I'm from Long Island. I love this town. What's the best thing about living in New York?
First off, I love the restaurants. There's a lot of food on Long, or, uh, different types of food on Long Island. Um, restaurants to try, and, um, really coming in the city though, there's just so much energy in here, and there's so much shopping here, and my mom always tells me I'm a bit of a shopaholic, and, um, tells me I waste too much of my money on it.
All right, so we happen to be on a corner where John Varvatos is. I think those clothes would look hot on you. All right, let's go check it out.
Let's do it.
After you. You first. He's a gentleman. I love them. Let's get out of the rain. Store to ourself. Very big in here. Where do you go first?
I mean, we might as well check out the shoes first. While we're here. Let's do it.
If you could pick out a pair of shoes for me right now, which pair would you pick out?
Well, I did hear a little bit about you, that you like to step outside of the box, fashion wise. So I'm thinking maybe pink suede, sequined zippers. That might be a little too far.
Okay. Um, let's see. Do you like these?
I do like those.
Or are you going for more of a slip-in?
I could go for both. Don't have either.
Well, let's just pile it on. We'll try this on. Ten and a half, please. They have a men's hat here. I don't know. I think you might
I think I'll pull this off.
rock that. Let's try. Ooh. You like that on me?
I think it's good.
You want to be best dressed of the NHL?
I'd like to be. There's uh, there's a lot of, you know, well-dressed guys out there though, so, um, it's not an easy task.
Playoffs this year, on paper, it wouldn't have been likely. You guys to get that far, but you did, and it was amazing. How do you build on that moving forward?
This year was the first year we really took that step forward and, you know, I've been here for four years now, and the first three were pretty rough, and we're excited the direction we're headed now. I think the fans are excited again, and we've kind of got a buzz again, inside uh, you know, the New York area, and, um, we're looking forward to next season.
Game day, how are you rolling into the arena?
Well, in the morning, we can uh, wear whatever we want. We can show up in jeans and then, and a t-shirt. It doesn't really matter, no one sees us in the morning. Um, but at night we have to be in a suit. Um, we have to wear a tie. If you're not wearing the right stuff, uh, you get a fine for it. So, um,
Like the fashion police. You get a fine if you're not wearing.
More or less, yeah. The NHL has the fashion police.
Okay, so let's take a walk around and see what you like here. Okay. Are you stripes?
I can wear stripes.
Can wear stripes?
I don't know if I wear them too much casually, though. I do like this. It's a little small.
A little small. A little snug. You have a hockey player body. Duh. What are you doing off the ice to keep this shape?
We have uh, you know, our strength coaches that um, make our program and um, tells us what we need to be focusing on in the gym, and, um, we get up every morning, get some food in you, and head over there and, um, get the workout out of the way.
54. 54. You're going to get the hat, too. That's okay. I don't know if the hat matches this one. Huh? You don't look like a hockey player right now. No. I don't know what you look like. But I'm glad I'm not picking out the clothes for you. All right. Sounds good. Got a new job. Stay, look in the mirror. You like it?
It's not. Yeah. I like it. It's nice.
Let's get you some jewelry. What do you like?
I like this one right here, I think. What do you think?
I think that's cool. It's subtle. Look at that. It's perfect. Looks good. Uh oh. Uh oh. Danger. Trouble. Here's this pink? This is the pink hat. This is the pink hat go with my pink. Or it's red. I think you need to keep it on for the rest of your
You're right. This might be destiny.
Wow. Your mom is going to get mad at me because
Probably will. You might get a call from her later. I'm spending all your money on clothes. This isn't me.
So that's not you. No. I don't think I do satchels. Satchels. A man bag. A man bag. Yeah. Which is also called a satchel, right? Well, with your purse, we can give you your hat, I think. That's a definitely. Can't do all this. No. No. And then with white shoes, we just put you out to pasture and call it a day. We'll put this here. Okay. Put that on top. Let's go play dress up. We will not look at those again. Done and done. Let's go. Okay. Okay, Matt, let's see your first look. This is sexy. I like this. You clean up nice. I mean, I don't want to spend your money for you, but I think I think you need this in your closet. Look number two. Very European, my friend.
Yeah, I feel like this is something I could wear to a Broadway show.
Okay, I have to note that one of the toughest guys in the NHL is telling me what he's going to wear to his next Broadway show. See, you have that casual look, like you didn't try so hard, but yet you really tried hard.
Yeah, I mean, we also had someone help us put this together for us, but uh, we tried harder than it looks, but uh, I do like the look of it.
Okay, one more outfit. Okay, cool. Okay, and the third outfit. Why you gotta be so darn cute? This works. This does work. Wait. What do you think of a black kind of suede leather coat?
Sounds good to me.
Done and done. Now if you had to pick one of the outfits, I kind of the suit amazing. The suit was amazing, and it had casually, I think I like this one. Matt, I think you did pretty well for a day of shopping.
I mean, I guess it depends what you call pretty well. Um, I thought we were coming here to window shop, and um, check out some nice stuff. Um, obviously I was excited to uh, meet you and get to know you and talk to you, but uh, and I'm spending a lot of money and uh, because of that I'm going to make you carry the bags. And uh, you put it in the car.
You were such a gentleman this morning, and now you're making me carry.
Yeah, well, you made me spend a lot of money, so I mean, things change quickly, I guess.
Okay, let's go.
