The beautiful thing about the old Dodger Stadium is that they would sell you cushions to sit on the seats. And then you would throw the cushions on the field. Or else you would, I think you would take them home. What's up, guys? Leslie Robbins here. Young Hollywood is at the Sports Museum of Los Angeles. It is time for Dodger baseball. We are at a night of entertainment with Don Mannily and funnyman George Lopez. Well, you have brought together some major heavyweights for this night. Tell me about your charities and what we're all doing here.
Partnering up with the Dodger Dream Foundation uh and Matingly charities. It's trying to get you know, this basically equipment to kids in the inner city. Kids that don't have an opportunity, uh maybe can't afford a glove. I mean, you probably can understand that growing up. You just wanted to play the game.
Absolutely. No, I mean, there's a lot of areas all over the world that need equipment and parks and everything, especially the game of baseball, which is a sport where you need a lot of equipment. So, events like this that can help that is unbelievable. We do anything for Donnie. He's such an awesome guy and uh he doesn't ask a lot of us other than playing the game. So, uh anytime we come to support him and one of his things that he cares about, it's uh it's a good thing.
Well, you clean up real nice for an event. Look at you. You're out of uniform. We're in the suit and sweater.
Um yeah, yeah. that's the biggest thing. You know, we always get these these events we gotta go to and always it's business casual. What what does business casual mean to a baseball player? Does that mean uh don't I get to untuck my baseball uniform and not put my hat on? So, um that's always my big question. What do you wear to a business casual event? There there's really no meaning uh I guess to a baseball player.
I'd like to point out we are standing in front of Babe's Ruth poster and I'm now standing next to you. another legend. That's awesome. That's George Herman. He's the man. Well, you're the man. grew up in Southern California. Went to USC. You're back in LA. Did you put the Dodger blue on and how did it feel?
Yeah, I wear it around almost every day. You know, I wear it around where I live in Orange County and uh sometimes people look at me like, "Yeah, that's not him. He's not going to wear a Dodger hat." You know, I've loved baseball my whole life and really the only time my grandfather and I ever really got along was at Dodger Stadium. So, uh, he would be amazed at what I've been able to do, but uh to remain a Dodger fan my whole life would probably have impressed him more.
Tommy the Sorta, are you going to get up on stage and give your go-to joke?
I don't know where to get off this stuff. I've not come here to be a comic. I've come here to satisfy our uh customers and uh the people of our communities.
So, what are you going to bring to the team as a coach?
Well, hopefully a lot of wins. Uh, you know, get the offense together. Um, have some really good talks in spring training, get on the same page. I think they're feeling a bit of pressure. What do you think?
Yeah, but I think I think every single season you put on a Dodger uniform, you're feeling pressure. They shouldn't have any pressure. No, you can't play the game and have pressure. Pressure is something that comes from within because of the fear of failing. We know we're going to have the talent this year and it's going to be a matter of us putting it together on the field.
Uh, when you get expectations, you get pressure. Uh, I think we're seeing that in LA right now. There's all there's a lot to do. There's a lot of preparation and a lot of work that takes place before you actually get to those games. And that's really the areas that I worry about. Uh coaches worry about is a preparation.
All right. So, what do you eat to maintain your physique to be game ready?
Ah, you know, I just during the season special, I eat whatever. I don't I don't care because uh we work out so much and we burn a lot of calories. So, I'm happy to uh just, you know, stay away from too many fatty foods.
All right. So, if you could create your own Subway sandwich, what are you putting on that sandwich?
The grilled chicken breast, Chipotle mayo, lettuce, onions, jalapenos, pepperonis, pickles, extra banana peppers, uh oil and vinegar too, cucumbers. Um, as many vegetables as I can, salt, pepper, and called today.
Do you think you're able to keep that on your menu once the season starts?
I do. That's what I eat a lot actually during the season. That's that's my my go-to meal if I need a quick easy on the way to the stadium. I know where Subway is and I actually stopped there and go there quite a bit.
Uh, I'm like a Philly cheese steak guy. Oh yeah. I like the like the cheese and the meat and the peppers and a lots of ketchup. Ketchup on everything. I get in trouble for that.
Tell me the moment you realized that you were going to make it as an athlete. Wow. I don't know if I've ever been asked that question.
I would say, you know, after I was drafted, I I felt pretty confident about being able to to work hard and play play well at any level. I remember a coach, uh, basically telling me, tell me every week he says, "I just want tickets when you get to the big leagues." And so it was at 10 years old, you know, but it gets you thinking and uh those kind of people are you probably don't get a lot of attention, but they're really important in a lot of kids' lives.
You have to believe in yourself first of all. Whatever you uh undertake, you gotta believe. Self-confidence is without a doubt the first step to success. It's something I'll never forget. I remember I got hit in the foot. I got the guy out and then picked the guy off, which I never do, and then struck a guy out. It was like the most ridiculous inning I've ever had, but it was my first inning in the big leagues and I'll never forget it.
My junior year in high school where I actually came back and played baseball because my sophomore year I quit baseball to play golf. And I came back to play baseball my junior year and I said, this is what I want to do for life uh for the rest of my life and I think that was it.
You have a big responsibility to make this crowd laugh tonight. How are the jokes going to be?
Well, if Dark? No, if if it's this bright, they'll it'll be very uh family-friendly, but we all share a common bond is that we all love the Dodgers and really we all dislike Frank McCourt. So, this is a great ownership and I'm excited about the fact that they're not afraid to spend money and made um, you know, adjustments to the stadium that you can't see. That's when you know you got money when you're when you're changing things that nobody can see.
What's going to be a good thing is seeing little George Lopez do a little comedy routine. What is your go-to comedy routine? Do you have like a go-to joke?
Uh, yeah, I do have a go-to joke. You want me to tell it?
Absolutely.
How do you make a Kleenex dance?
I don't know how.
You put a little boogie in it. You're welcome. That was for free. I'm George Lopez and you're watching Young Hollywood. Which I'm not part of anymore.
