Hey, what's up guys? Young Hollywood is hanging out at KCON with Roy Kim. How's it going?
Hello. Hello. It's good. How are you?
We were just talking about how you're performing tonight. Are you excited?
I am. It's, uh, it's my second time in KCON and um, it's been three years since I was last in in LA, so, yeah. It's my first time. It's so interesting here.
First time in LA?
Well, first time at KCON.
Oh, I see. And it's so cool. I mean, people are screaming up here. I think they're screaming for you.
I know. I don't think so, but yeah.
They're like, where's Roy? They're freaking out.
Thank you.
How would you define K-pop in your own words?
When people think about K-pop here especially, I think they they think of more bright lights, like dance songs or performance-based songs. But there's a lot of songs that are like K-ballads or or K-folk. There's there's just all different kinds of K-pop. So I'm I'm think I'm trying to think of the word that that that would cover everything else, but
So it's not all just poppy. I mean, there's all different kinds too.
Yeah. Even even the songs I do, I think it's it's different from what people would generally think of as as K-pop. So, um,
Yeah, because I was going to ask you, what do you think sets you apart from other K-pop artists? Wow. Besides how cool you are, right?
Um, I mean, I I sing and and write songs of mine and, uh, I'm not a good dancer at all.
You're not?
No. No, no. No, no. I'm so bad at it.
Do you want to do you want to learn, or is it kind of like
I tried I tried to learn it, but it's just you just got to be born with it. So yeah, I'm so bad at that. So. Without my guitar on stage, I feel so naked, you know? It's just
What is the word?
Yeah, exactly. exactly.
So you write your own songs?
I do. I do.
Okay, so that's cool. That's kind of hard. Um,
Yeah.
You know, I mean, obviously, you're an artist, so not for you. For me, I don't know how to write.
No, it is hard. It is hard. I didn't want to be arrogant, but it is hard, yeah.
Yes. Where do you get the inspiration from?
Um, mostly from my life, I think. And then and then it it starts my life, and then it gets to my friends' life, my my my family's life. Yeah. Just everyday life, I think, just influences me in in writing anything.
You kind of like to reveal a little bit of personal details about yourself through your songs?
I used to. Like, well, the first two albums, I think, I wanted to to add a lot of my personal memories just because it felt more, I guess, unique and more more reliable to just myself. Yeah. But then as as it's it's been it's this is my sixth year, I think, being a singer, but, um, as time goes by, I think it I'm trying to write songs that I could relate to to the public, so.
Oh, sure. Yeah. It has a fan listening to it. That makes sense. If you could collaborate with anyone out there, like, who would be your dream person to collaborate with on a song? You mentioned John Mayer, so.
John Mayer! That would be awesome! That would be a dream come true for me.
Your Body is a Wonderland together. Oh my gosh.
Yeah. I don't know if he would like it, but, yeah.
I think he'd love it. Before we end the segment, can you teach me something in Korean? Like, I was just trying to learn it at my last interview, and I bombed it. I
What what did they teach you?
I asked her to teach me how to say "I love you," and there's I can't get it. I can't even remember. What was it? Yeah. Saranghae. Saranghaeyo. How do you say that? I mean, it's just my tongue, so I have to. Right. But something else. How about, um, nanin nanin babo babo. Yep. What does that mean? What is that? I'm stupid. No. I'm I'm nanin wait, I'm going around and say that? Does everyone know what I'm saying? Nanin babo. Nanin babo. Saranghaeyo. I'm stupid.
Thank you so much, Roy.
