Vegetarianism is becoming a growing trend throughout Hollywood, and you may be surprised at how many celebrities are foregoing juicy, tender meat this holiday season out of respect for their furry friends.
Funny lady Ellen DeGeneres and her better half Portia de Rossi will be celebrating the holidays this season vegan-style. Ellen is an animal rights activist and has even launched a website, Going Vegan with Ellen, to help others rid consumption of animal products in their lives. Portia became a vegetarian after moving on a farm with Ellen and buying cattle for the land. An epiphany occurred as she looked out back at the animals and realized she couldn’t eat something that reminded her of the newest family additions.
Another couple that will also be prepping a meat-free holiday dinner this season is the dynamic duo Chris Martin and wife Gwyneth Paltrow. Vegetarianism runs in the family, as even daughter Apple doesn’t eat meat by choice. “She came to it on her own. Sometimes I can get her to eat a little fish or something, but almost never,” says Gwyn. If Gwyneth ever needs dinner options, she can look to her cookbook My Father’s Daughter: Delicious, Easy Recipes Celebrating Family & Togetherness, which features 150 recipes, many vegetarian or vegan.
Someone who can’t convert her spouse (Mike Fisher) to vegetarianism is country crooner Carrie Underwood, who dished about her diet on an Australian talk show earlier this year: “He’s Canadian, and they like meat there, so it’s all right.” Carrie’s been a vegetarian since age 13 after seeing what happened to the animals on her family’s farm. It wasn’t until earlier this year she went vegan and it was for a practical reason -- she’s lactose intolerant. Her hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed; she’s held the title of PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity in both 2005 and 2007.
To conclude our list of some of Hollywood’s PETA-friendly stars, it’s time to announce the Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity of 2011. The prestigious award goes to: Russell Brand, who’s been a vegetarian since he was 14 years old. According to the Daily Mail, Russell stuck to his diet even through hard times. "Even as a junkie, I stayed true to vegetarianism." Brand added, "I shall have heroin, but I shan't have a hamburger." Wife Katy Perry tried to live a vegetarian lifestyle for her husband but hasn’t been able to completely stick with it.
More celebs that are vegetarians include: Pamela Anderson, Kristen Bell, Natalie Portman, Alicia Silverstone, Hayden Panettiere, Olivia Wilde, Anne Hathaway, Brad Pitt, and Christina Applegate.
Meat-lovers, would you ever consider becoming a vegetarian?
