The Golden Globe Nominees Kick Off Awards Season!

The dramatic actresses have their work cut out for them as well, but it should be noted that, in a curious twist, only one of the Best Actress-Drama nominees comes from a film that was actually nominated for Best Picture! That distinction goes to Ms. Natalie Portman, who has been killing it at the box office and in critics' columns for her shady turn in Black Swan. But she'll have to contend with the likes of Halle BerryNicole KidmanMichelle Williams, and newcomer Jennifer Lawrence for that top prize.

Other goodies in the Motion Picture categories include Johnny Depp receiving two nominations in the same category - Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical for Alice in Wonderland and The Tourist (the latter coming as somewhat of a surprise, considering most critics have panned his performance in the action flick). Both Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway were recognized for their performances in the rom-com Love and Other Drugs, as were both the leads of The Kids Are All Right (Annette Bening and Julianne Moore), Emma Stone received a surprise but no-less deserving nom for Easy A, and Kevin Spacey got nominated for, well, being in a film this year and for being Kevin Freaking Spacey! A notable absence on the nominees list is True Grit, which had critics and audiences buzzing alike that this would be sure-fire contender this awards season. Ah well, there's always the Oscars!

On the TV side of things, the nominations read pretty much like a carbon copy of this year's Emmy Awards, with notable exceptions being popular newcomers like "Boardwalk Empire" and "The Walking Dead". Emmy champ "Modern Family" is in the running again, but unlike the Emmys, which bestowed THREE nominations on "Modern Family" actors in the Supporting category, the lone representative at the Golden Globes will be the actual Emmy winner, Eric Stonestreet. "Glee" received their due accolades, with nods for Best Series, Best Actress (Lea Michele), Supporting Actress (Jane Lynch), and Supporting Actor (the crazy talented Chris Colfer). Noticeably snubbed, though, was the final season of "Lost"! Not a single nomination! And we thought their shut-out at the Emmys was bad...

Nevertheless, this year's Golden Globes promise to be a good one -- expensive blockbusters, subdued character studies, action thrillers, psychological dramas... They're all here! And to top it all off, Robert De Niro will be receiving the Cecil B. DeMille Award for his life-long contributions to cinema.

The nominees were announced this morning by Katie Holmes, Josh Duhamel, and Blair Underwood, and, knowing full-well that the Golden Globes are the only awards show that serves alcohol to its anxious guests, they got their drink on early with a toast, sipping some Moet & Chandon, the exclusive champagne of the Golden Globes. Clink-clink!
