At the age of 27, Nick Cannon can consider himself a success in acting, writing, producing and making music. He is an overachiever, and he has only just begun. Born in San Diego, Nick began performing at the young age of eight, when his grandfather left him a gift of several instruments. He began to learn to play and even recorded songs at home on his boom box. Not long after that, he started to perform onstage. He, along with his best friend, Steve Groves, started a rap group called Da Bomb Squad. The duo found themselves opening up for some of the top singers and acts of the 90s, including Will Smith, Montell Jordan and boy band, LFO. Though he loved making music, he decided to explore other paths. At the age of 16, Nick moved to Hollywood, where he decided to further explore his gift for comedic timing. He started to land gigs at famous comedy venues like The Improv, The Laugh Factory and The Comedy Store, sharing the stage with such renowned comedians as Chris Tucker, Damon Wayans and Chris Rock. It was a gig as an audience warm-up act for Nickelodeon's hit skit show, "All That" that led him into acting. Recognizing his skills as a comedian, the producers of the show quickly scooped him up, and he became a regular on the show. He soon began to host several programs on Nickelodeon, such as "Snick House" and "Teen Nick," a music based program, before becoming the creator and executive producer of his own show, appropriately titled "The Nick Cannon Show." The show's premise revolved around Nick taking over real life situations, such as family dinners or a baseball game, with celebrities like Master P, Usher, Britney Spears and Eddie Murphy. After the success of his own television show, he moved on to the big screen, getting his first leading role in the feature film, Drumline. He was a featured voice in the big screen adaptation of the comic strip, Garfield, and shared the screen with Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez in Shall We Dance. In addition, he starred in Roll Bounce, Love Don't Cost a Thing with Christina Milian, Underclassmen, and Bobby, a film by Emilio Estevez that has an all-star cast including Demi Moore, Sharon Stone and Anthony Hopkins. This year he can be seen in the feature film remake, Day of the Dead and Ball Don't Lie with Harold Perrineau and Mykelti Williamson. He is also filming The Killing Room, a psychological thriller that stars Clea DuVall and Wes Bentley. Nick is definitely a jack of all trades. He recently returned to his musical roots and has been featured on the soundtracks for Drumline and Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. However, singing is not enough for this talented young man. He has taken on the extra challenge of serving as CEO of his own record label, Can I Ball Records. The label is partnered with Universal Motown. In addition, he has his own production company, called Mr. Renaissance, which will allow him to create, write and produce tv shows and feature films. Nick has gone from singer to comedian to actor to music mogul to executive producer within the past decade. In 2006, he became part owner of the urban clothing line, PNB Nation, which opened a flagship store on Melrose Avenue. His hard work has definitely paid off. In May of 2007, he was honored at Cannes Film Festival and received the Breakthrough Actor of the Year Award for his work on Bobby. Nick has more than proven that he can do it all! He has the talent, the determination and the intelligence to become a master at anything he wants to accomplish, and is a true inspiration to all of those in Young Hollywood.
