"My Dad gave me a guitar and he tried to get me to play it the proper way," she says. "I just couldn't get it, so when he left the room I would turn it upside down and play it that way. It just felt better that way. I do everything with my left hand." Though the comparison to other upside down rockers like Hendrix is obvious, Malina is true to herself. "I think it's important to be unique and set yourself apart," she tells me. "I think the more you make yourself the only person who can do what you do, the better shot at being the front runner and creating your own lane, whether male or female."
She's seasoned her skills on stage with years of practice. "I took it serious when I was 12," she says. Like every other successful act, it takes hard work and determination to make it happen. Her debut album, Diamonds and Guitars, features the young lady setting fire to the strings - and soulfully singing. She names her inspirations among Prince, Eric Clapton, Chaka Kahn, Janet Jackson, Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn; which shows in her style. When she's not making music, she's probably at the mall! "I'm a girl's girl," she says. "Shopping is always at the top of the list. I also love the drive-in theater to watch horror flicks." Want more? Join Melina on mySpace and follow her on Twitter
