So You Think You Can Dance pirouetted back into primetime last Thursday, after the two-part American Idol finale, leaving me hopelessly addicted to FOX for a full three nights in a row last week!SYTYCD uses the same format as the dearly departed Idol (same producers too), but you know what? It works. Viewers are taken on a dramatic journey from step one: the audition. The first round of hopefuls proved nothing short of jaw-dropping, gravity defying, mystical and sometimes mystifying dance moves from the professionally preened to self-trained to just plain curious entrants who pop-locked, back-flipped and even stripped bare for the judges approval!
As is our tradition, my crew got together for TV night so we could gawk and squeal at the parade of hot bodies doing things it usually takes special effects to accomplish. With a little sippy (codeword: alcohol) and snacks it was the perfect evening in with friends, all of whom have been eagerly awaiting the return of the show -- and Cat Deeley's ferosh fashion adventures. From the website, it doesn't look like all of our favorites are returning. Shane Sparks' bio is conspicuously missing, which makes me sad. Frowny Face. I'm holding out hope he'll be a special guest appearance when it gets to the finals. But I take comfort that my absolute favorite judge and choreographer, Mia Michaels, is front and center. She reminds me of this really intense acting coach I worshiped in college. She made me cry once during rehearsals. Sometimes you have to tap into the deep emotions and stuff. It certainly made me appreciate the work it takes to make words on a page come to life.Mia has a way of reaching in and pulling your guts out like that, except without words; just movement. I hope we continue to see more of her during auditions. Her pieces are so profound, complex and emotional it's no wonder she won an Emmy for her work last year. You still have time to catch the boogie fever from the beginning. The next round of auditions airs TONIGHT, Monday May 26, at 8/7c.Typing...with spirit fingers!--Wes
