Inside a relatively unassuming ivy-covered bungalow on Melrose lies one of the major fashion meccas in Los Angeles. It holds within it the hippest, trendiest fashions from today's hottest designers like Chip and Pepper Jeans, Jet, Armani and Juicy. It is a Hollywood stylist's dream come true. It is called Fred Segal. This 40 year old institution, named after its founder, was run by the Segal family until 1976, when it was taken over by Ron Herman, who still operates it under the Fred Segal brand.Once inside Fred Segal, you discover that it is actually a mini-mall of sorts, a maze of different, eclectic boutiques that range in name from Fred Segal Couture to Fred Segal Fun to Fred Segal Beauty. The shop holds the latest apparel for men, women and children, lingerie, accessories, luggage, cosmetics, and workout gear. Basically, if you want it, odds are Fred Segal has it. It can get a little pricey but if you look hard enough, you can find some good deals. And, don't forget that there are semi-annual sales to look forward to!Fred Segal also has a shop in Santa Monica that is still owned by the Segal family and lies one block east of the Third Street Promenade. However, the store on Melrose will always serve as a landmark to both natives of Los Angeles and tourists. When it comes to star sightings, Fred Segal is the place to be. Celebrities such as Matt Damon, Sandra Bullock, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck, Alicia Silverstone, George Clooney and Nicole Kidman have been spotted at the store. Stars like Jennifer Aniston, Kirsten Dunst, Jodie Foster and Julia Roberts have also been spotted in the Santa Monica branch.Inside the Fred Segal Beauty area, there is full service salon which is recognized as a leading force in style and beauty. The professionals within this section of the store, including hairstylists, make-up artists, fashion stylists, costume designers, nail care specialists and body artists, are of the finest quality and come from all over the world, bringing a sense of globally influenced trends with them. Fred Segal's apothecary is also known for introducing the most up to date, unusual and niche-market brands to its clients. Also nestled within the store's collections of shops is a spa, which offers the finest quality products and pampering beyond your wildest dreams. The spa has 6 treatment rooms, private nail care room, wet room, steam room, private showers and changing rooms. In addition, Fred Segal Beauty offers workshops that serve to enhance your creativity, discover the latest trends, and learn new techniques while being taught by today's most celebrated artists in the industry.After a full day of shopping, styling and pampering, you might be a little hungry. Fred Segal also has a caf called Mauro Caf, which is a true culinary experience. The menu features everything from salads to pasta to a vast array of desserts. The caf also houses an art exhibition, so you can browse the pieces for sale while waiting for your meal to arrive. There are also some outside tables for when the weather warms up, but if you are looking for star sightings, sitting inside is the better choice. On a side note, it is always a good idea to make a reservation at this popular spot. The Santa Monica branch also features a caf.For those who have not had a chance to visit the store, it is a must for anyone who is into fashion and beauty or is just looking for a good place to relax and eat.
