"Big Love" Bows Out to a New but Familiar Tune

No doubt, one of the most recognizable features of the show was the opening sequence of the first three seasons, featuring the classic Beach Boys song “God Only Knows.” In Season 4, the opening sequence was changed (into something that looks like a perfume commercial) and the song was replaced by the more dreamlike “Home,” by British group Engineers… which is lovely, but many of us remain loyal to the Beach Boys tune and will forever identify it with the show (and vice versa!).

To that end, the show is paying homage to its roots by featuring a countrified cover of “God Only Knows” for the grand finale. Sung by Dixie Chick Natalie Maines (accompanied by the drumming talents of Red Hot Chili Pepper Chad Smith), this new version keeps it traditional while incorporating the more simple, rural feel of the show. The serene vocals of Ms. Maines breath new life into this 45-year-old hit.
