The Weeknd leads MuchMusic Video Awards nominations

The Weeknd will be the one to beat at Canada's upcoming MuchMusic Video Awards after leading the nominations list for the upcoming prizegiving.

The Toronto native scored six nods, including Best Pop Video Of The Year, Best Director, Fan Fave Video and Video Of The Year for the promo to his hit Often.

He will go up against Arcade Fire (We Exist), Grimes featuring Blood Diamonds (Go), Kiesza (Giant In My Heart) and Majid Jordan (Her) for the coveted prize.

Teen Internet sensation Shawn Mendes follows close behind with four nominations, while Ed Sheeran, Arcade Fire, Grandtheft, Grimes, Kiesza, and Majid Jordan all tie with three nods apiece.

British singer Sheeran will have tough competition in the Best International Artist category, going up against the likes of pals Sam Smith and Taylor Swift, her new boyfriend Calvin Harris, Ariana Grande, Hozier, Kendrick Lamar, Nick Jonas, Rihanna and Sia.

The Weeknd, Jonas, Jason Derulo and Mendes are slated to perform at the Toronto prizegiving, which will be co-hosted by Sheeran on 21 June (15).
