A sequel to the huge musical hit Mamma Mia!, starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, is in the works.

Film studio Universal confirmed on Friday (19May17) that a follow-up to the 2008 movie, titled Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!, will be released in July 2018.

Ol Parker, best known for his work on the Judi Dench movie The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, will write and direct the sequel, according to Variety. Parker, who is married to Thandie Newton, also directed the Dakota Fanning drama Now Is Good.

Much of the original movie's cast, including Streep, Brosnan, Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfried and Stellan Skarsgard are expected to return.

Mamma Mia! was a film adaptation of the hit West End and Broadway musical, based on the songs of Swedish pop ABBA, and composed by band member’s Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus. It followed the story of Sophie, a young bride who wanted to find out her biological father was before she walked down the aisle.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the sequel will be set in the present day with the returning cast members, while new actors would play younger versions of Streep, Brosnan and Firth for part of the story that is set in the past.

The original 2008 movie, directed by Phyllida Lloyd, grossed more than $609 million worldwide, and was one of the highest grossing films directed by a woman.
