Leonardo DiCaprio has fired back at critics of the gay storyline in his new film J. Edgar, insisting it's obvious that the former FBI boss he portrays in the film was more than just friends with his constant companion.

DiCaprio and Armie Hammer play J.Edgar Hoover and Clyde Tolson in the new Clint Eastwood biopic and the Titanic star claims they had to allude to the two colleagues' gay relations.

The movie star tells the Los Angeles Times, "You talk to the FBI, they'll tell you, 'Absolutely not. These men were of service to their country.' And you talk to another crew of people. and they say, 'Absolutely, without question. These men vacationed together. They lived together. Hoover left Mr. Tolson everything he had when he passed away.' You know, come on!

"These two men spent almost every minute together for decades."
