Kesha cried her way through studio sessions for new album Rainbow

Kesha struggled through tears some days to write new music for her first studio album in four years.

The American singer/songwriter is gearing up to release Rainbow, the highly anticipated follow-up to her second studio album Warrior, and the first music she's released since her legal battle with former producer Dr. Luke but she is "super pleased" with the result.

"I would get up. I would get in my car, and I would drive to the studio in my pajamas, and I would lay in a hammock and cry and write a song", the Supernatural singer confessed in an interview with Radio 1 Breakfast Show host Nick Grimshaw.

"But at the same time, I think if you listen to the record, I got a lot of that out of my system at the beginning.

"Once I'd got done weeping, then I got back to myself."

Kesha is still tied into a multi-album deal with Sony, and says that Rainbow was a hard record to write but revealed this is a "gift" for her fans.

"It's my gift for my fans because they've been unbelievable over the past couple of years. I don't know what I would have done without them.

"They've been unwavering every single day. I get the most beautiful messages from all over the world and this record is dedicated to them. It's for my soul, dedicated to them.

"I feel like this music is the most proud I've ever been of anything I've ever done in my entire life, which is so exciting to say," she said.

Rainbow is due for release on 11 August (17).
