Elizabeth Banks confirmed to direct Charlie's Angels reboot

Elizabeth Banks has been confirmed as the director of an upcoming Charlie'S Angels reboot.

The actress and filmmaker will helm an update of the popular '70s TV series and film franchise, while also producing the movie under her Brownstone Productions banner, alongside her husband and producing partner, Max Handelman.

Sony has slated the Charlie's Angels reboot for release on 7 June, 2019, with the studio recently hiring Narcos writers Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard to re-write the script, according to the Tracking Board.

Charlie's Angels first premiered on the ABC network in 1976, and ran for five seasons. Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith took on the roles in the series which portrayed private detectives working for a benefactor named Charlie.

While Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu starred in Sony's 2000 movie Charlie's Angels, which grossed $264 million worldwide.

The 2003 sequel, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, brought in $259 million at the box office.

Casting details have not yet been released, however, Hidden Figures star Janelle Monae is apparently being targeted for a central role.

Banks has just wrapped on Pitch Perfect 3, in which she reprised her role as Gail. The 43-year-old directed the second installment of the Pitch Perfect franchise and is also set to helm a TV movie called The Greater Good.

Meanwhile, Sony has also announced that The Nightingale, will be released on 10 August, 2018. Directed by Michelle MacLaren, the drama is based on the novel by Kristin Hannah about two sisters living in German-occupied France on the eve of World War II.
