Rapper/actress Angie Martinez was honored by the mayor of New York City for her outstanding contributions to her hometown as a Puerto Rican entertainer.

Martinez, who is known as "The Voice of New York", was feted on 19 November (15) during Puerto Rican Heritage Month, and Mayor Bill de Blasio officially recognized the date as Angie Martinez Day in the Big Apple.

"She really has become an icon, a virtuous icon," de Blasio said during a press conference. "An icon that makes people very proud. Makes us proud as New Yorkers, makes the entire Latino community proud and particularly makes the Puerto Rican community proud."

The Grammy-nominated Martinez has featured on songs with Mary J. Blige, Missy Elliott and Lil' Kim, and Wyclef Jean, and is currently signed to Jay Z's Roc Nation label.
