Chris Colfer is to make his directorial debut with an adaptation of one of his children's books.

The actor first rose to prominence for his portrayal of Kurt Hummel on TV series Glee, but has also received recognition for his popular fantasy novel series, The Land of Stories.

Twentieth Century Fox has now picked up the rights to the series, and has tapped Colfer to both pen the script and helm a movie version of the first installment, The Wishing Spell, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Night at the Museum filmmaker Shawn Levy is to produce through his 21 Laps production company with Dan Levine, while Colfer and Rob Weisbach will act as executive producers.

The Wishing Spell was released in 2012, and follow twins Alex and Conner Bailey as they magically travel through a cherished book of stories and have adventures in a land where they come face-to-face with the fairy tale characters they grew up reading about.

Colfer's Land of Stories universe has landed him on The New York Times Best Seller list in the Children's Chapter Books category, and has spurred on five more novels, as well as illustrated picture books and an audiobook.

The sixth and final novel in the series, Worlds Collide, is slated to hit shelves on 11 July (17), with the author set to embark on an accompanying publicity tour.

Colfer, 27, has previously proved his screenwriting talent, having penned 2014 Glee episode Old Dog, New Tricks and the 2012 movie Struck by Lightning, in which he also starred.
