Why You Should Be Excited For Sony's 'Baby Driver'!

Written by Emmy Freedman. Published: June 27 2017

We’re right in the middle of a trend in which movie releases seem to lack originality. For example, we’re getting yet another Spider-Man movie within the next couple of weeks and a third installment of Despicable Me. Essentially, we’re getting a ton of remakes, generic comedies, and sequels. That’s not to say that these movies are inherently bad. Despicable Me 3 is getting great reviews so far, and I’m sure Marvel will do something great with Spider-Man: Homecoming. But there’s nothing ultimately unique about these movies. We generally know where the storyline will take us and what the conclusion will be.

That’s why a release like Baby Driver is so refreshing. I watched the preview for it a couple of weeks ago and had to press replay immediately in order to fully understand what I was watching. In short, the film is about a young getaway driver who gets involved with the wrong heist. There are also some romantic elements, and something interesting about why he always wears headphones on the job. It sounds like an compelling plot with quirky and exciting elements mixed in, and I can’t even begin to guess the conclusion!

Besides delivering a unique storyline, Baby Driver also offers us a killer cast. There’s Ansel Elgort (AKA Gus from The Fault in Our Stars), Kevin Spacey (AKA the best living actor), and Jon Hamm (AKA the most attractive living actor), plus a large ensemble cast that promises plenty of talent.

It’s also directed by Edgar Wright, who consistently provides off-beat stories with a proper mix of humor and adrenaline rush. Other movies of his include Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Hot Fuzz. They often become cult classics, and perhaps this one is headed in that direction as well.

Lastly, this movie comes with an impressive soundtrack. There’s a real medley of artists here from the likes of Dave Brubeck, Run the Jewels, and The Beach Boys. Someone also made a coolremix of the trailer that highlights just how excited you should be for both this movie and its music.

If all that’s not enough, consider that it currently has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and if that’s not good enough reason to give this movie a shot, I don’t know what is. So hop in your car and speed off to the closest theater starting tomorrow (June 28)!
