Wellensteyn Winterwear Combines Fashion and Function
Written by RJ Williams
Although most people tend to think of California as an oasis of sunshine and palm trees, the truth is, we get our fair share of harsh winters! If it weren’t for the smog, you would see that L.A. is surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Yep, it can definitely get chilly around here, and the same goes for much of the United States. November/December rolls around, and your wardrobe changes dramatically. Time to trade in those designer T’s for heavy sweaters, scarves, and bulky winter jackets. Yeah, winter can often be a drag in the fashion department, especially here in Los Angeles where fashion-forwardness is a year-round commitment!
Which is why I am totally digging Wellensteyn.
Way too often, we have to make the choice between either looking stylish or being comfortable when it comes to winterwear. Well, Wellensteyn has solved that dilemma for us with their incredible line of functional AND fashionable jackets.
And they know what they’re doing too. The company began about 60 years ago in Germany but in a completely different industry – fishing! Founder Adolf Wuttke developed and patented a whole slew of instruments and equipment that revolutionized the shipyard industry and deep-sea research. At a certain point, his customers began to come to him for proper workwear to compliment the equipment they were using; Wuttke’s technical designs were so good at standing up to the harsh conditions out on the sea, surely he could develop some outerwear that were just as sturdy! He rose to the challenge, and over half a century later, Wellensteyn is the go-to brand for heavy-duty industrial businesses!
Eventually, Wellensteyn made its way onto dry land and the United States, where their fusion of functional, weather-resistant materials with classy, couture-like style is becoming a big hit with the style-conscious! Paul Rudd, Mario Lopez, America Ferrara, Steven R. McQueen, Liam Hemsworth, and Rachael Leigh Cook are just some of the big names who have embraced the Wellensteyn brand. The sturdy-but-stylish jackets have also made their way into the pages of high-profile publications such as Esquire, Men’s Health, and L’Uomo Vogue. Not bad for a company that started out selling welding rods for the local German fishing industry!
Check out the Wellensteyn website for a catalogue of all their latest collections. Yes, it’s a bit pricey, but considering the quality of material you would be getting, it’s well worth the investment to be both protected AND sophisticated!
