Singer-Songwriter Kimbra Is Way More Than Just “Somebody That I Used To Know”
Written by RJ Williams
Not a whole year ago, one of our eagle-eyed bloggers told you guys about an up-and-coming singer out of New Zealand who was poised to make a big splash here in the States… it was only a matter of time.
Well, thanks to a fellow named Gotye, an insanely catchy tune, and an equally amazing music video, Aussie pop star Kimbra is now a household name and enjoying a cushy spot at #1 on the U.S. charts. And she hasn’t even released any music in America yet! That is all about to change next Tuesday (May 22), when Kimbra’s debut album, Vows, will finally drop Stateside, after having already gone platinum in Australia and New Zealand.
The accolades are definitely deserved. For those who only know Kimbra in the context of her duet with Gotye, rest assured that she has plenty of chops to make it on her own. At only 22, Kimbra has been writing songs since she was 10 and playing the guitar since she was 12. At that same age, she was performing the New Zealand national anthem at professional rugby matches in Auckland. Her single “Simply On My Lips” won a Juice TV award for Best Breakthrough Music Video when she was only 17. So, she may be young, and she may be new to us here in America, but she already has plenty of cred to her name! And we’re forever grateful to Gotye for giving this gal the boost she needed to get some international recognition – her sound is undeniably unique and just as charming and memorable (if not more) than “Somebody That I Used To Know”!
